you posted this just to get us mad at the watermarks, didn't you
>>32831904
It could be worse. It could be like how this artist deals with their watermarks in pic related.

>>32831930
>This his shit art is worth stealing
>>32832008
Art like that is only worth stealing if you want to see how these pedantic artists would react to their watermarked art being reposted or stolen by somebody else.
>>32832188
because is not in the bag
>>32830204
>>32831930
I never really understand this line of thinking.
Like, okay, it's your shit, you don't want anyone stealing it (putting aside the fact that the character wasn't even yours to begin with) so you put your watermark.
BUT if you're so paranoid to the point of bastardizing the art itself (in this case, that fucking watermark) why bother posting it online? Why not just put it up somewhere in your room so you alone can appreciate your shit?
One thing I need to point out, I can understand doing that if you want to sell your stuff, that's justifiable. It becomes a problem only when you don't.

>>32834416
>this is for me and my friend
>Our use only
Then whyd you upload it to the internet you retarded fuckwit?
>>32834461
The artist and a friend made the design so they could cosplay it, that's what she meant. But as stupid as it sounds, she doesn't let people cosplay her gijinka without her permission
>>32832494
I notice there's a sliding scale of how good the art is vs the amount (and size) of watermarks. Better artists usually drop the fuckhuge watermarks in favor of signatures unless they plan on making merch but even then they tend to use a pretty unobtrusive proof mark.
>>32837762
>>32841179
This one is kinda cute
>>32834475
One thing about that: can you actually get sued for stealing (or in this case, making a cosplay inspired from) fanarts? I've always seen people going
>Permission to post this was granted by the original artist
As if the fanartists themselves have a say in this.
>>32842889
I guess it could fall under parody law, not sure
>>32842889
Technically speaking anything you draw is automatically copyrighted to yourself. Copyright protection law makes it relatively easy to enforce your own copyright by just issuing takedown notices to people who repost your image without your permission.
However, while that works for just reposting a jpeg you made, it's more complicated when you're dealing with a design like a cosplay because you'd have to take it to court and prove they took your design. But the thing with fanart is that you're dealing with IP and characters owned by someone else, so it'd be easy to prove that your design is a derivative work and therefore not yours in the first place, which would not only easily lose you the suit but also set a precedent for Nintendo to come in and claim they own ALL of your drawings of their characters.
>>32843083
So why they can ask you not to do it, they can't do shit to enforce it?
>>32843962
They ask people to avoid doing it BECAUSE they can't do shit to force them.
>>32843962
Most people are willing to just be nice and take things down when the creator asks.
But if someone wanted to be a dick and ignore them, the artist wouldn't be able to do anything but get mad.
I mean, TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, they would have a legal ground to sue, and the person is TECHNICALLY violating copyright. But they'd have to be crazy to waste money suing when even the dumbest lawyer on planet Earth could get the suit thrown out without it even going to trial and it would likely result in them losing any claims to copyright.
See, even though just by the basic word of law you own anything you make, the second you put it before a judge you're risking getting the right taken away. So it's always in the artist's favor to not risk that, because just having the power to issue copyright claims to people who use your work is the most powerful tool they have to protect their work and a judge would take it away in a heart beat.
>>32834461
>>32842889
Artfag here, fanartists get pissed when people repost fanart without permission, as it's almost always without credit either. Then you have people who go and edit someone else's drawing, i.e adding some filter, or even changing a characters hair or skin color. It's a real problem, and a lot of Pixiv artists have shut down their pixiv accounts over it.
The artist in the OP's image having extreme useage of watermarks is honestly justified after /vp/ meme'd her Incineroar driawing.
>inb4 hurhur its just a drawing who cares
It's the same deal as when anons get pissed when cross siters take OC from 4chan and reupload it to reddit for upvotes, it's normal to be mad when someone else gets credit for something you put work into.
>>32850308
It's definitely because I don't share the sentiment as most people, but when it comes to fanart, I honestly couldn't care less.
The drawing is mine, sure, but the characters aren't. As far as I'm concerned, they're as valuable as a stick drawing, regardless of how good it is. Credit? They can take it for all I care. Not like they can recreate it either, so it's their problem.
Now, if we're talking original art, then yes, I can see the need to put that amount of watermark. Hell, I'd probably do the same, by uploading a low-res version and covering it to the point where it's practically just the watermark.
>>32857891
>Not like they can recreate it either
But what if they could recreate it?

Because people repost and don't credit, which is why nowadays this is getting more common.
It's the only way the word can get around for an artist. And for an artist this is vital to build up a fanbase.
Think about it, if you are an artist and want to build a following. You post your image and it only gets a bit of attention.
Meanwhile, instead of someone just simply retweeting/reblogging to share your art, they just repost it to boost their own follow count. The repost gets tons and tons of attention instead of the original post. The artist doesn't even get any positivity from this, no one knows their profile since they weren't credited. All it does is boost the reposter. So essentially, the artist's hard work has resulted in someone else reeling in the benefits, and they are no further in growing their fanbases.
Literally the only way to ensure they receive credit is to watermark.
>>32857891
The reason it's important for fanart is because these are the pieces that get reposted, it's rarely original art.
A lot of artists draw fanart because it's how they build a following so people can become interested in their original work.
In saying this though, the OP's image is way overkill. As a result no one's going to look at it. Just make sure to have your URL or username very visible in an uncropable area, that's enough. Otherwise you're turning off viewers.
