None of the protagonists past Red have a defined canon state, because they've all had Male/Female Counterparts but at no point have either of them showed up beyond a gender-ambiguous mention from a character here and there.
In FRLG's case, Leaf was more of an obligatory requirement since going back to being forced to play as a Boy would've gotten everyone pissed after Crystal and RS.
And yet, we still only saw Red every game after FRLG with no sight or sound of Leaf.
