Gengar can do a lot of things well and he's a lovable huggable ghost. Not even Cursed Body was a hard blow on him.

The god king Clef also dropped to UU temporarily too, though. Starmie is still down in UU which is crazy. SM threw a lot of shit up in the air, but Gengar still ends us being an OU staple because its just too good.

Starmie was cucked by Greninja and Aegislash for half the gen, and only rose once they were banned. Not only that, but it's dropped to UU again.

Gengar, by comparison, was UU for a few months if only because of the initial shock of losing its ability + shiny new toy syndrome, and rose back on its own merits and the fact that it was still useful against the current metagame.
