Early on I used to name them because I didn't know they had actual names, but I haven't done that since my third save file on Red way back when.

I've named them after friends who also played them since I was a kid, but I can't really do that anymore since none of my friends play the games anymore. Ended up just making a name I liked for the last game I played.

In FireRed, my rival is usually something rude. In HG/SS, same thing. In Platinum, I always name him KLONPET. In BW2, I always name the rival Travis.
