So I've been thinking about how Niantic was going to implement raid bosses.

What could they be doing to make a 3k CP Tyranitar into a 26,000 CP Tyranitar?

CP formula takes in a few things:
- CP multiplier tables (based on level)
- IVs
- Base stats (HP, ATK, DEF)

They could just jack up the level, but then that would mean that they would also dish out a shitton of damage and tank an equally shitton of damage too. HP values are just HP * 2 so with 20 people whacking it for 1 HP a hit, it'll go down really quickly. Also if you have a Pokemon with a jacked up level in the hundreds or thousands, that's going to be one bigass number table taking up space on your phone. So they are probably not going to be increasing the level or adding extra CP multiplier rows.

Given that you can catch these raid boss Pokemon, I doubt that they'd put in ridiculous IV values just to make their CP values extra high. That'd make all Pokemon worthless except for raid bosses and then if you use these raid bosses in a fight, they'd shred the defending raid boss really quickly so it can't be that.

Now base stats are where most of the CP value comes from. But you can't jack up ATK or DEF or else they'd be unbeatable. So that leaves only HP. This would mean that raid bosses are just normal Pokemon with a few hundred/thousand extra points in base HP and that's what jacking up the CP into the tens of thousands like a Borderlands style difficulty balancing (aka. everything's a tedious fucking bullet sponge). So how much more HP are we talking here?

HP is included into the CP formula as a square root. e.g. sqrt(HP). Meaning that 4 times the HP is double the CP, 9 times the HP is triple the CP, etc. So the ratio between 3000 CP and 26000 CP is like...9-ish.

r^2 = 9-ish

About 80 times more HP

A lv 40 0% Tyranitar has 158 HP at lv 40. If my theory that all the extra CP is from HP, then a raid boss Tyranitar will have 158 HP * 80 = 12,640 HP.

With 20 people in a raid dealing damage over 300 seconds (5 minutes), you're going to need only at least 2.107 dps on the Tyranitar at all times. Yes, 2. Assuming all 20 players have decent fighters and are pulling their weight. If the Tyranitar is really being treated as a lv 40 Pokemon, then you might be able to bring Machamps and Vapes and not even need the whole 20-man raid group for something like a Tyranitar.

But Blisseys.

A 0% lv 40 Blissey has 403 HP
80 times 403 HP = 32,240 HP
That's equal to about 5.37 dps for the whole 5 minutes. And again, this is assuming everyone can screenmash that dps for 5 minutes straight even after accounting for desync and Pokemon getting switched.

Given that shit like the Dragonite in https://support.pokemongo.nianticlabs.com/hc/en-us/articles/115009004747 is 26k CP, I'm going to say that this x80 base HP multiplier seems the most likely implementation.

Now you're wondering "Fuck this is retarded, can I do it if I get a raid group?" My answer is "probably". Something to consider is that if you take 100 seconds to take down a 3k CP Blissey right now, you are doing about 8 dps on average (because defenders have double HP in a gym fight) so if you can take down a regular Blissey under the time limit, you are probably already set for raids.

I'm actually a bit mixed on this. The new gym system in general is a step down from what we had but this raid system sounds like it actually makes having maxed out battlers worth having.

tl;dr - Raid bosses are lv 40 Pokemon with x80 HP.

You have to work backwards if you want to figure it out.
Raid bosses have a ranking of difficulty, and allow from 1-20 people to take it down, so if you scale the amount of people to the rating system as a suggested amount of players (which is an actual value displayed, as seen here), you can figure out a probable multiplier to its base stats which, directly affect its CP almost at the same rate you multiplied its stats but not necessarily spot on same multiplier.
I guarantee blissey will be either a 4/5 or 5/5 raid boss and actual increased CP won't be a good determiner of how hard it is to kill, a 36k TTar boss is probably easier to kill than a 31k Blissey.

I think they have already accounted for players being shitters/retards because 2.24 dps against a Dragonite is piss easy. An Ice Pokemon screenmashing Frost Breath probably does like 20 base dps with type advantages factored in.

There's the added caveat that this is over 300 seconds. One attacker is not going to survive a 300 second fight. You will probably need a full 6 Pokemon team of attackers and the raid boss will probably shit out charge moves out the ass because of 17-20 people feeding it so much fucking energy. It's not just dps, it's dps after accounting for fainting and dodging.

I originally thought it was going to be multipliers on all possible stats but if the raid boss is putting out shit damage, all of the multiplier might just be in HP. And let's face it, when shit devs want to add a difficulty tweak, they default to shitting out bulletsponges instead of real balancing. That's why I brought up Borderlands.

If alakazam actually had its attack buffed to 22k CP it would fucking demolish anything it touched with any attack, dodged or not.

My general understanding of this is that being in gyms doesn't matter as much as you can only collect 100 coins a day, and only get them after your pokemon get returned. So if 20 mons who've accrued 100 coins each all get returned on the same day, you still only get 100 coins total. Granted, you'd have also gotten a shit load of dust and your badges for those gyms would be sky high, but the coins are going to be jack shit.

The real meta is attackers. You're going to need some heavy duty motherfuckers that are ready and able to output some serious DPS as fast as humanly possible, while still staying alive as long as possible for them raid bosses. Also, to take out gyms and put something in them, you'd want the exact same mons.

A Pokémon will not leave until its motivation is gone. Motivation doesn't decrease unless it is defeated, or if time passes. If a spoofer teleports when it's being attacked, and with badges, now spoofers can tell exactly which gym is being attacked by checking its motivation meters, they could just sit and feed them until the fighter gives up. Always disconnects. Never reliable. Lags your spawns in game, for example, if you have it on and active to catch pokemon, they won't appear on your screen for like 10 seconds. So you're basically throwing a blind ball.

It's useful if you live in a city and don't have time to stop every foot or two for a pokemon or a pokestop. You gain tons of pokemon/items/xp you would normally be forced to walk past. Also in my experience if you're in a car or bus it lets you attempt to catch pokemon that would normally not appear due to the speed lock.

If you don't live in a city or are a neet with tons of free time it's not really worth it.

If you can get one for cheap go for it. I got mine for $15 because my co workers at toys r us are fucking bros, and it's worth that price but certainly not its msrp.
Its good for hatching eggs if you often can't have the game open, at work or school for example.

It also comes in handy for spinning stops occasionally, but I find it does lag in how long it after you're in range of the stop that it allows you to spin, sometimes failing to do so for no reason and forcing you to turn the game on anyway. However it can be quite clutch sometimes too, for example, I'll often drive to work with the game on sleep mode and go plus connected mainly because I know what areas I can stop at to catch things or spin pokestops, I'm not driving while watching my phone and sometimes go plus' lag will pick up a pokestop I've already passed and wouldn't be able to spin successfully normally.

It will disconnect randomly and can be difficult to reconnect but it's not nearly as difficult as others have made it out to be.

Catching pokemon with it is hardly worth it, unless you have tons of shitmon spawning around you constantly and tons of balls to waste on them. I usually leave this option turned off.
