The only problem with Alolan forms is that they didn't make more. Alolan exeggutor is my second favorite mon ever.

Why even add new features when we could have had new Pokemon
Why add a new region, we could have had new Pokemon
Why add new trainer models or animations, we could have had new Pokemon
Why add or expand on customization when we could have new Pokemon
Why spend all this time and effort making things that aren't 100% brand new Pokemon

But the execution is terrible.
The choice of pokemon and their new forms are just bad.
I look at OP's chart and I don't see much of a tropical island theme going on.

Exeggutor (like it or not) at least makes a whole lot of sense.
Surfing Raichu and firedancing Marowak? Okay sure. But the rest?
Not one but TWO lines becomes ice type when introduced to a fucking tropical island?!

If this was the best they could do with the concept I gotta say I'd just have preferred 18 new regular pokemon instead.

I really feel they just half-assed it with only 18 alola pokes all from gen 1. Either go all out and add tons from many gens or don't bother at all

I don't mind the idea. Some are terrible, especially Golem and Dugtrio, but some are really fun like Exeggutor, Muk, and Ninetales. I just wish they weren't all Gen 1. Seeing something like an Ice type crystal Gigalith would have been awesome even if it were shit, which it would be because slow Ice type.

I think they should've only added Alolan forms that actually feel like they belong there, like the Rattata line, the Diglett line, Exeggutor and Marowak.
Things like the Sandshrew line, the Vulpix line and the Geodude line would've been more fitting as regional forms somewhere else, like Sinnoh, what with it being freezing cold and having a magnetically charged mountain filled with Geodude splitting it in half.

Regional clones are still different creatures. They only share a general theme or idea. Variants are literally the same Pokemon with a few minor details changed.

Alolan forms were a really cool idea with really poor execution, like Megas all over again

Overall I like the Alolan variant concept and I hope they expand upon this. It only makes sense that the same type of Pokemon in different parts of the world would adapt to that particular climate.
I will admit though that only having gen 1 pokemon available is pretty poor, but hopefully they'll add later gens pokemon with different variants.
It might get crazy though if we have so many variants of the same pokemon that we might see Gyms dedicated solely to one pokemon but the leader uses all of its variants
