Edited blocksets in pokered assembly so that the water edges use the same tiles as ledges, much like gen II. Looking pretty good, but does anyone know if using the ledge tiles will still allow for Surf to work, or any other glitch? Only thing I've checked is if my character leaps into the water, but it doesn't, so that's always something.

The OP of /hbg/ has a pastebin detailing how to get yourself unbanned using a public seed. Keep in mind a public seed is always bound to be banned eventually (though the ones I use always seem to last 2-3 months before it happens) but as long as you keep replacing it with new ones you're fine.
Keep the Wi-Fi switch off when you're using homebrew software or injected VC and it will help lower your chances of getting banned again, and check /hbg/ next time some issue with CFW comes up, since /heg/ is about ROMhacking specifically and not console hacking.

I don't consider what I do to be that hard, but I also think I do things in a slightly unorthodox manner, doing the music largely in a text editor and compiling that into the Crystal ROM. I'm honestly not sure how I would even write a tutorial for this besides just detailing what the different code functions do and I don't even know all of them myself. I learned how to do this by just looking at and imitating the songs from vanilla Crystal.

I'm on a roll tonight, only have one more Polished Crystal request after this and then my contributions to 3.0 are finally done. I've had this giant backlog for Polished Crystal that I haven't cleared since last November, and even though the development of the hack itself has been as tumultuous as my upload schedule, I've felt really bad at the thought that my inconsistency in uploading songs was holding the hack back. My conscience is almost clear now.
I decided to try doing a battle theme without drums this time, to better match vanilla Crystal's battle music. There's nothing in-game preventing drums in battle themes and I usually implement them because I think the songs sound better with them, but trying to match the style of Gen 2's compositions instead of only caring about hardware limitations was a neat exercise.
>>

It's not Pokemon.
>>
Any notable hacks of Sun and Moon yet? I want something to tide me over till Ultra since vanilla Sun and Moon are boring. I 100% Rising Ruby a few months ago, so, I was hoping for something of that quality. Doesn't need to be a catch em all hack, just enhanced battles would be nice.
>>
>>32800485
There's Nova Sun/Umbra Moon by Dio Vento, the guy who made Rutile Ruby/Star Sapphire. They're fun as long as you don't train anything in the fast or erratic experience groups because they completely break the mid-game level curve.
>>
so, what are (for you) the best hacks set in a full new region? So far the best ones I've played were Clover, Vega, and Gaia (which would be the best to me if it was completed). Glazed looks nice but seeing stuff like pseudo-legendaries being available in the very first routes makes me think it isn't really well designed.
>>
>>32800540
I never played his Rutile Ruby/Star Sapphire stuff since I heard it's just being level 100 for most of the game. Is that him or am I mistaking him for another hacker?
>>
>>32800575
That's him, though it doesn't hit level 100 til near the end in his SM hacks from what I've seen. I haven't finished them because my Milotic hit level 100 while everything else was level 80, and it sucked all of the challenge out of it. What I have played was pretty good though.
>>
>>32800592
I'll give it an attempt. It's that or I just play Eternal X or whatever the X/Y hack was.

>>32800571
Try Blazed Glazed, it's a redesign of it. Aside from that there's really not a lot of them. I don't really play a lot of completely new Region hacks though.
>>
>>32799901
I think the reason why gen I and II battle themes lack drums is because the channel for noises is often occupied by sound effects for moves (which would make keeping a consistent groove pretty hard).

alright let's post in the right thread this time

Wanted to make it possible to walk on overworld rocky platforms, but since removing the collision from the rocky surface made the top edge of the platform contain both collision and non-collision parts, thus enabling the character to just walk on and off the platform from the top. Not too great since that'd mean said platforms can't be used to wall off the player since they can just step on them and walk off the map, breaking the game.

tl:dr another another layer on top, thus creating a full tile's width of collision. Is the overworld perspective still the same, or does it look weird?

I've been working on my own version of TTPCrystal251

Been a couple weeks, nearing completion,

However, today when I opened cygwin to 'make' the rom, it only makes the vanilla tppcrystal251

All my changes to the sprites and asm files are still where they should be and still contain my changes, but cygwin will only compile the vanilla version

Anyone have any idea why?

This one's cheating a bit. Since I'm delaying the process of figuring out how to edit/create tilesets, this is just a mockup of what I aspire to create for this town.

The eastern area is the main town and the western area is industrial buildings. The northeastern area will become a small garden/orchard of sorts behind a school.

And the western exit leads to a beach based on the actual North Korean beaches in Nampo and Hamhung.

NzsGf3Wg.png
37KB, 728x394px
To preface this, I'm using pokered disassembly for a RB hack, and RBMaps to edit the maps.

Today I edited Route 2 and Viridian Forest's mapObject files so that those maps connected directly to each other, thus not needing to pass through the gates that separate the two maps (the small foyers with 1-2 people in them). Actually got everything to work in the end, or at least in the game. But after completing all that, RBMaps flipped its shit and no longer displays maps and blocksets, like pic related.

Is this a common issue when editing warp points? Is RBMaps panicking because the other two gate maps that are now "unused" messes up the game's structure?
>>
>>32819343
Okay, found the issue. RBMaps REALLY didn't like that I added another warptile ID to the overworld tilset, once I removed it things are back to normal.

Can try and continue to experiment with this and see if it depends on which tile I use or if it's just purely the number of warp tiles that throws it off its loop (which I'd find strange since the number of warp tiles aren't even cosistent between tilesets).

>>32819411
Alright, solved it.

https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/data/warp_tile_ids.asm

Had to remove the "$FF" at the end of the Overworld warptile IDs to make it work after adding another one, so right now it looks like this

OverworldWarpTileIDs:
db $1B,$2C,$58

Pic related is how Route 2 looks like now. The purple stripes at both ends of the forest now leads directly into Viridian forest, without the gates separating the two.

It's working. I don't understand why removing $FF solved it, but that's what happens when an amateur tries their hand at this.

>>32819580
RBMap is a pre-disassembly program for back when ROMs were hex-edited directly. Which means it deals with direct addresses/offsets. When you add a third ID to OverworldWarpTileIDs (plus the list terminator $FF), it shifts the other groups forward by 1 byte, plus everything else in that ROM bank. Which is probably confusing RBMap.

On the other hand, by deleting the $FF, the game will now continue reading subsequent bytes as part of the OverworldWarpTileIDs list. (This is intentionally done for some lists like CemeteryWarpTileIDs.) So the list is really: $1B,$58,$58, db $3B, db $1A,$1C,$FF. Not a huge deal, but TryDoWildEncounter will fail if you're standing on any of those tile IDs, even if some of them ought to work. (Because it calls IsPlayerStandingOnDoorTileOrWarpTile, which uses IsInArray on the tile ID list.)

I'd suggest using the original warp_tile_ids.asm file when designing maps in RBMap, and then add your modified lists back for the actual game.

If I can offer my two cents, I do a combination. I move all the OW sprites and script tiles off to a corner (in the mountains/trees), take a screenshot, then move them to somewhere else, take another screenshot, and finally edit the two together to omit the unwanted elements. (see: >>32798993 and >>32804574).

In addition, I design maps in G2Map first using a different ROM file, so I can plan things out before creating the final version in crowdmap on my main ROM.
>>
>>32824857
I'd suggest sticking with native Pokemon as much as possible, since they're starters for that region. And some of the Ruby & Sapphire version exclusives would make great pairings.

Seedot & Lotad cover grass and each have three stages. Lunatone & Solrock work as well but don't evolve, obviously. Same with Zangoose and Seviper.

Even without version exclusives, Shuppet & Duskull would be really nice since they evolve and ghost types are GOAT. You mentioned Plusle & Minun which would also be great.
If there were some way to force certain evolutions, two Clamperl could be used but might be pretty boring until then.

There's a ton of options.
>>
>>32824857
Could there be a way to allow for more than three starter teams, similar to how ultra violet allows for so many? I really like all of the options >>32825309 listed that aren't clamperl.
>>
>>32825357
Do you mean like giving you two starters? Because that would also be a great idea I might go with that one.

>>
>>32826380
Oh I thought that's what you meant you were doing initially, getting two starters for a double-battle based campaign. I meant having more than three choices of starter duos.

I understood the idea like: instead of choosing one starter Pokemon, you select from several pre-paired Pokemon. Each choice giving a set duo of two Pokemon like Plusle & Minun, Duskull & Shuppet, or Solrock & Lunatone.
I was suggesting that, instead of only three choices, you could have a selection of the five duos the previous anon suggested.

It's a very delicate balancing act. Using actual memoirs from NK defectors + other books on NK, I want to tell a story that has serious enough elements to not come off like a tired, generic NK spoof, but subtle enough that doesn't cross into full 3edgy cringe territory.

Would there be a battle against a Kim Jong Un-type character? Probably. Would there be creepypasta-tier blood and gore edginess? No.

Here's the gist of what I have (not much, since I'm working out the maps first): Kid leaves village with a Pokémon and a bootleg Pokédex, obtained by a local smuggler, and decides to sneak out of the village and explore the country, using underground passages and tunnels to travel around guard houses. They compete in some underground "gym" system. Over time, the kid sees shitty aspects of the region that his isolated living in an isolated village kept hidden from view (dilapidated areas, people suffering, and just overall shittiness) and tries to find a way to escape.

Add all sorts of stuff, differently sized stones, random things in the way and shape it somewhat irregularly. Also add some defining tiles like the smoke tile if it's a volcanic cave. It can also look good if there are layers which fade into darker as you go far away from the entrance.
Add little patches of water and smashable rocks and put valuables or rare candies behind them to give the player the incentive to keep playing so they then get back to reach those items.
tl;dr fill them with all sorts of different shit.

you don't use the tools when you have the disassembly. You just code in the disassembly. Use the rom or prism's source code for an idea on what to code and how.

Here's the equivalent in assembly. It's not advanced code, just text. I know "assembly programming" may sound intimidating, but it really isn't hard to get started with. When you edit the ROM, you have to deal with hard-coded values and can't easily move code around to get free space.
Just as a really general example, let's say you wanted to shift around the Pokémon indexes, make Chikorita the first Pokémon, why you'd want to do that doesn't matter. If you were going to do that by editing the ROM, you would have to find every single place Chikorita and Bulbasaur come up regarding shit like rosters and Pokémon and swap their hex values, as just a start. In the disassembly, "Bulbasaur" is a defined constant with the value $01 (the $ means it's in hex) and "Chikorita" has the value $98 (152 in decimal), and wherever they appear in the disassembly you just have their constant there instead of the raw hex value. If you wanted to switch Bulbasaur and Chikorita, you'd just go to the part of the disassembly that defines those constants and switch them, and every other place where one of them appears would change accordingly when you built the ROM.
There's also the advantage that you can do things that people haven't written tools for yet if you use the disassembly. You could write the tools yourself obviously (after all the tools didn't just drop out of the sky, someone else made them), but if you're willing to learn to do that then there's no reason you wouldn't learn how to use the disassembly since it's much easier.

So the assembly is definitely the place to be by the sound of it. Thanks again for the help, there's a lot to do but now I've got an idea of how to do it which is way more than I started with.
