What went so RIGHT for Fairies and Steels?

Fairies are powerful, bulky Steels check Fairies.

Well for fairy it's not JUST the typing. Everyone of them is a good Pokémon regardless: Tapus are broken because of the Terrains, Mawile has the highest attack stat in the game and works well in Trick Room, Primarina has the strongest Z move, priority and a huge Special Attack, Mimikyu has Disguise.
Remove the Tapus and Fairy doesn't seem so broken anymore.

Steel and Fairy are the 2 most broken types in the game. Simple as that.

Steel is broken defensively since Gen 2 and passable offensively since Gen 6, by far the best type in the game. Fairy's weaknesses are very rarely used as coverage, so it's a pretty big defensive bonus while also being good offensively (all resistances are hit SE by Ground, same as Flying, or Fighting in Ghost's case).
Ice mons will continue to be niche until GF gives it some resistances. The fact GF keeps shoving the "defensive Ice mons" meme down our throats doesn't help.

Gengar and Gyarados are used mainly for their megas, and Primarina is actually A- rank in Battlespot singles. Its z move is much more useful in 3v3

Is this a joke? Karenfag hispters HATE mons like Gyarados, Gengar and Primarina, they are everywhere in top level official singles competitive play.

Mons who would fall under the Krenfag umbrella in 3v3 singles are the likes of Mega Beedrill, who you see getting used a lot in the lower ladder, but then disappears from sight the moment you start facing semi decent battlers.

Because the most broken type WAS Dragon, Fairies countered that so Fairies became the Meta. Since Fairies were the meta people needed Steel to counter it.

Pokémon is Rock Paper Scissors.

Water, Steel, and Fairy are the holy trinity of overpowered typings. The only reason water Pokemon aren't higher on the usage stats is because there are so damn many of them to choose from, so usage is divided between them.
