Tbqh I've played gen 4 and HGSS was the only saving grace for me. DP felt like a chore to play and I wasn't a huge fan of Sinnoh nor its mons. I don't understand the "gen 5 ruined the series" meme though, other than the lower sales. I genuinely enjoyed the games

I've never played a Sinnoh game because for a really long time I couldn't come up with 6 pokemon from gen 4 that I actually like. I still dislike almost all of them and all of the starters. I'll look up the entire list of gen 4 pokemon and list all the ones I like right now. Cross gen evo's I may have used before, like I used Weavile and Mismagius for example in Soul Silver so I wouldn't use them again in Sinnoh.

Skuntank, Drapion, Yanmega, Rampardos, Bastiodon, and Gliscor.

That's it, that's the entire gen 4 roster of pokemon that I like, not only would I not be able to get Rampardos and Bastiodon in the same game, but I'd have two dark/poison types, two flying types, and two rock types. That team has some fucked up balance. I don't even like Gliscor that much, he's just kind of acceptable to me.

So that's why I will probably never play a Sinnoh game. I only like six pokemon on the entire continent, and not even that much. Probably couldnt get them until late game.

Green is a lot of fun. I can read the basic moonrunes but mostly don't understand what I'm reading. Running through the game partially blind is an interesting experience.

You can get the same experience by simply playing one game per gen, preferably the third versions if possible. Arguably, the first Black and White games can be played too for those New Game+ type bonuses that transfer to their sequels, and since the two games offer more than just a difficulty ramp up like Emerald did to RS. Remakes can either be played in place of the originals, or skipped altogether. Playing both the originals and third versions/remakes is redundant, as it's the same adventure as before, with only slight differences, and you're only going a step back if you're going from a third version to the original. As for using other versions of the game as an extra save, you can always delete your save if you want to play a new game, and if you're attached to your Pokemon, you can lend it to a friend or use Pokebank in Gen VI if you have it. If you're using it as another save for extra box storage, there's also Pokemon Box RS, My Pokemon Ranch, and now Pokebank, which are all cheaper alternatives to storing your Pokemon.

I ended up going with Blue->Crystal->Emerald->Platinum->White->White2->X for now.

The one with the really terrible English patch is a fucking blast. It's fun to try to remember or deduce what kind of moves your mons are attempting to learn through the wacky engrish, as well as generally not knowing what trainers are switching to. A lot of the dialog is entertaining. AND you get see all the fugly green sprites. Highly recommended experience.

Just some minor bonuses. Hilda (or Hilbert) gets mentioned by name in place of "that trainer", and you're able to encounter N's Pokemon in routes. Flashbacks happen if you're into story-based elements, you get to battle Bianca and Cheren with their BW teams, and you get a "true final battle" of sorts with N in his ruined castle. Depending on the season, his team changes to work around a certain weather condition, and he can be rebattled every month. It's definitely a step above the other games, where you get no transferable reward for beating those games.
