I wish I was a good player around that meta. Though, I guess a metagame without fairies(dragons steamrolling everything in sight), no sticky web(can't sweep with slow wallbreakers), and Gems replacing Z-moves(Splash and Hyper Beam are back to being useless) being forgotten is for the best.

VGC allowing transferred stuff was awesome at least(Follow Me Magmar anyone?).

I was approaching 21 when BW1 came out, I feel really old now. I loved Gen 5 then, still love it now. BW1 was so good that even though BW2 is definitely the better game, it didn't have quite the same impact as BW1 at the time.

Tubeline Bridge is comfy as fuck. Not fond of how BW2 made it and Icirrus City postgame - those were some of my favourite areas.

In middle school I only had a GBA so I played all the DS games on an emulator. But back then my family only had one computer so I could only play for like an hour a day. This made me not really able to sink a lot of time into them so I would pretty much just make a beeline for the next gym/plot point and skip everything I could. For Christmas of 2012 my parents finally got me a DS Lite for like 60 bucks so I bought Black 2 with my birthday money in January. Since I now had several hours a day to play, I was able to sink a lot of time into it. On the bus and between classes I would explore Unova and when I got home I would play online, which was a real novelty to me since I hadn't ever done it before. Even though the DS Lite was super old by then I felt really high tech playing against people around the world from the comfort of my bed. I think the Gen 5 UI also contributed to this. I really liked the aesthetic of Gen 5, it felt really modern. I had to figure out how to change our router to WEP but it was worth it. I only played triple battles and my team was Mamoswine/Crobat/Politoed/Ampharos/Azumarill/Leafeon. I don't remember what my rating was but I do remember I usually won. It was really fun seeing what strategies people could come up with and I think triple battles allowed more creativity. I remember I was really shocked when I saw someone use Beat Up on their own Terrakion for the first time. Ever since then when teambuilding I always make sure I have some way to beat Beat Up Terrakion, even though it isn't used too much. I also used the DNS change exploit to get events and stuff. This was eighth grade so I never talked to most people I knew again after that year but I made one friend at school through playing Black 2 and he's my best friend to this day. I ended up selling it after I moved all my Pokémon to Gen 6 but I wish I didn't. I might buy a DS flashcart later today so I can play it again. My favorite area was the Marine Tube (cont.)

and I used to sit there and watch the different Pokémon swim by. I don't get that sense of wonder anywhere in Gen 6 or 7 but I don't know if it's because I got older and sadder or because the games are just worse. I still get excited the first time I play through the game but it's not fun to just explore anymore. God I wish I lived in Unova. Late eighth grade was a really happy time for me because of Gen 5 and nothing has come close to that feeling since.

Gen 5 was my re entry into the Pokémon series. I really liked how they fleshed out the characters in that game. I'd really like to get my hands on Pokémon White again someday. I remember getting teased by some of my friends because I'm black and I chose White. Good times.

Do we know what Japan thought of Gen 5? Here there were a lot of normies who hated it. I wonder if Japan felt the same way and it made Game Freak change their approach. Maybe the reason we have no postgame now if because they thought no one appreciated it.

I bought White when I was starting my first year of university. I went ahead and saw the Pokedex to know which version to get for the exclusives, but I knew nothing else about the games. It was absolutely magical. It was like my first time playing Blue as a little kid. I loved encountering only new Pokemon. In spite of their linearity, each city and each route had a little something that made them worth revisiting. My interest in Pokemon was slightly waning at the time, but Gen V is what brought me back into the series.

I remember that I replayed the game four or five times, just so I could use every starter and the different Pokemon in the region. I liked how each gym leader felt like their own person and each had a role to play. I loved how alive the region felt, like it was an actual place that could be visited. It also introduced me to my waifu.

I was overjoyed when I saw the news of B2/W2. It was when I first started going on 4chan so I got to experience the hype season here. Those were some great couple of months.

Something I really liked was seasons. It was fun to revisit areas and see what had changed. It kept things from becoming boring even if you had explored a lot already.

I started with ruby, and I loved them, the ds era was the best, with hgss and unova.

The idea of just having the new mons at your disposition was the best, I don't know why people didn't like that, if you are playing a new gen then you'll mostly want to use the new mons. I hope they do this again.

I still remember the first time I arrived at Virbank city, it was a foggy rainy night. Gives a nice comfy 20th century noir feeling.

Unova is my favourite but I understand the hate to BW1 for the exclusive new mons thing. I would be sad too if there are no unova mons/my other favourite mons available in a new region, even if I wasn't planning to use them.

I started with Gold and while it's close, Gen 5 is my favorite gen. Byfar the Gen that I've played the most.

I love almost all Gen 5 pokemon that aren't Emboar or Vullaby. I love that the gym leaders were memorable. I love that the towns were all unique. The other locations were mostly memorable. I love that the games were actually (comparitively) challenging. I love that they had sequels instead of a rehash. I love that BW1 actually had a villian well enough written to make you want to agree with them. I love that Gen 5 has byfar the best story. I love that it doesn't hold your hand or treat you as special, you're just a normal self-made trainer.

My only complaints I can think of about the games are the lack of a Battle Frontier equivalent (much more fun than just Tower clones like the Subway), and the fact that the rivals are not as fun to fight as Gary/Silver.

Most of this story strikes close to home for me. Shitty cheap DS, changing security to WEP, those DNS exploits and downloading legendaries.

I'm personally a huge Hoennfag, but this is my most replayed gen. I've replayed it so many times but it still hasn't gotten stale. I also absolutely love the protags of BW and BW2.

Thanks for sharing your story! Makes me feel just a little bit old since I was in college when Gen 5 hit, but nostalgic all the same. Sadly by that time, all the genwunners who came back to play HGSS had abandoned ship to start making fun of Pokemon again, so there weren't many people to play with.

If you haven't already, you might consider trying the Blaze Black/Volt White mod(there're versions for 2 as well.) They make it so you can catch every Pokemon somewhere in the game, re-balance trainers to be much harder, and touch up on certain Pokemon stats and types if they were underpowered. It's a fresh coat of paint that helps make the game feel new again.
