Are there any emulators with internet link support out there that can handle battling? As far as I've heard, KGB can't support it because all it does is mirror your keystrokes to a running, hidden copy of your rom on the other player's computer which means battles will desync from things like criticals, crippling status, etc. I'd prefer one that supports gen1/2, but willing to take what's available (if anything). Trying to get a friend into it, but he'll probably write it off as autistic if we play battle sims.

I want the autistic RPG experience attached onto it as well, as dumb as it sounds. I don't think my friend will be charmed by Pokemon if it's presented to him first as rock paper scissors on crack.

I successfully played the link battles via LAN and also online using Hamachi back in like 2010.

What I meant is that it doesn't pseudo-emulate linking. KGB will run a hidden instance of your rom and save on the other player's machine which causes desync if you try to battle on that emulator (criticals, sleep/paralysis and anything else that adds randomness). Thanks for the advice. I should've given TGB a better glance.
