Ash is so stupid he forgets pokemon he's seen before and has to use the dex to find out about them again. He was also such a shit trainer in the beginning that he only got half the badges because ' kindness towards pokemon', 'you saved our water in a gym filled where we could refill the pool when we get our water pokemon back from the pc', 'made the leader smile' and 'you saved my pokemon from the burning gym'. Granted the last one was heroic but he didn't beat half of the first set of gyms and that was during the time when type immunity didn't mean a fucking thing. Onix is suddenly effected by electric attacks because it was sprinkled with water? A Marowak before the league is effected by electric even without being wet, a big Onix was effected even though it didn't do much damage. Not even people on this board could do as bad as he did in the beginning and would eventually make it further than 'Mr.PowerOfFriendship'

That really just depends on the world. In game world, probably. It would be more like the real world, and I know I can't win tournaments here, against other people.
