Alola region has been further fleshed out with some areas expanded upon, and more Pokémon from past regions.
New far-off area reached via boat, allows Pokémon with Alolan evolutions to evolve into their standard, non-Alolan evolved forms.
The Ultra Dimension is also expanded upon, becoming its own fully fleshed out area (about half the size of Akala), where a good portion of the story’s climax takes place.
Additionally, Rockruff has a new evolution form which is only obtainable by leveling it up in this area. The new form’s rocks are a dark, translucent color (similar to those in the Ultra Dimension), and has its own exclusive Z-Move.
QR Scanner roster is completely different, can now find rare Pokémon from other regions not previously available in Sun & Moon (e.g. Kanto and Sinnoh starters).
The Battle Royal has been expanded to include the new “Pokémon Hyper Tournament” mode, which involves a swiss-style tournament where you battle 7 different trainers one at a time (some are past-Champions and Gym Leaders), and the amount of Pokémon you K.O. compared to the amount of times your own Pokémon are knocked out determines your ranking at the end. The number of trainers you face is currently being fine-tuned to not be too time consuming.
The Battle Tree remains mostly the same, but with some changes/additions to the Battle Legends.
In this story, Gladion and Lillie take on different roles, with Gladion now being the one who rescues and protects Cosmog, and Lillie having taken Type: Null with her.
In this story, Mohn is now more involved, being the head of the Aether Foundation researching the Ultra Dimension. His goal is to track down Lusamine, who was lost to the Ultra Dimension a few years beforehand during an experiment.
Prof. Burnet now works with Mohn, with the Dimensional Research Lab now being an offsite research facility for the Aether Foundation.

The Ultra Beasts play a larger role in the story, acting as a gauntlet towards the end. You fend off invasions at each island, with each invasion being led by a Totem version of the Ultra Beast making up each invasion force (e.g. a horde of Buzzwole being led by a Totem Buzzwole). The Boss Totems of each horde are shiny versions of themselves. You cannot capture any of them when you first encounter them but can do so after completing the main story.
Solgaleo and Lunala’s new forms are enhancements of themselves, achieved through a special new Z-Crystal used in conjunction with their signature moves. The new Z-Moves allow for their Radiant Sun/Full Moon phases to be maintained for the rest of the battle through using Necrozma’s prism-focusing ability.
