Are Ghost types dead or alive? Are they literal ghosts?

They just have ghost-like qualities. Otherwise how would they breed and hatch from eggs.

What I'm not too sure about is if ghost pokemon can actually die. Like, do they fade away? do they live forever? some of them are literally just spritis haunting something so it would be weird to me that they could "die".

What'a wrong with Kadabra being a former human? And Marcargo's temperature means nothing. According to the anime, mons like Ponyta can control how hot their flames are or whatever.

And who makes the Dex entries? Humans who are still learning about Pokemon.

For the most part, I take it as primary Ghost-type = literal ghost (though not necessarily dead people; could be underworld creatures like Litwick and Drifloon), with at least one exception being Oricorio.

Secondary Ghost-type = biological lifeform with spooky shadow powers or weird lifeforms with ghostlike properties (e.g. Rotom is non-corporeal and can possess appliances because it's made of plasma). Possible exceptions are Shedinja and Marshadow.
