Pokemon as a franchise probably would of ending seeing as how poorly Gen 5 sold compared to the rest of the franchise. BW are the second lowest selling mainline games (not including third versions), right next to SM, which are on the 3DS and are only a few months old. It probably would of sold less than what it had now if it hypothetically were Gen 1/2. Instead of having things like the Mew glitch or Pokemon like charizard that kids would love, we would have Garbador, Emboar, and Vanilluxe with no secret/rumors, and this would probably prevent Pokemania since no one would want to play them.
If it was Gen 2, Pokemania would of just stopped and people would of dropped Pokemon all together.
Simply, because of Pokemon like Garbador, Pokemon wouldn't have the kick it would need to be as successful as it is today. BW being Gen 1/2 could be successful if they removed/replaced Pokemon like Garbador and Emboar.

alright, I've had just about enough of people putting gen 1 on a heavenly pedestal as if any other gen masquerading as gen 1 would have killed pokemon before it took off. Time to take off the rose tinted lens and tear it down and I say this all as someone that started pokemon on gen 1

here's the big fucking thing, that was back before the internet revolution, before we had bulbapedia at our fingertips. if gen V had been 1 there'd probably genesect, melotta glitches and rumors you could get other kyurem forms. Back then there was a ton of ambiguity simply because the internet wasn't an all knowing and all present tool at the time.

as opposed to what? a fucking ball with a couple screws and magnets? A pokeball with eyes on it? A a duck with a leek? every gen has it's shit mons.

Now, this is anecdotal evidence, but I gave my copy of white 2 to my kid cousin and he went nuts seeing the final evolution of tepig, as he asked what all the starters evolved to before he picked in his own game. The only reason he seems less cool to you is because you're looking through rose tinted glasses. This kid hadn't played a pokemon game before and started on V as if the last 4 gens didn't exist to him.

and give garbador all the shit you want, but no one's going to shit on gen 1 for having a literal pile of purple shit. I'm near char limit so let's hear your excuses.

kanto as a map was fucking bland. Yes I fucking said that. there's hardly any exploration aside from seafoam islands, the power plant, the rock tunnel, and mew's cave. beside that it's just as linear as any other pokemon game. and don't even get me started on the cycling road, at least hoenn's bike path actually gave you a shortcut.

lavender town might as well be the most interesting point of the game with the sliph scope and the spooky vaneer. Taking down team rocket was also a fun point, and after that about the only source of thrill left in the game was the E4. as for post game fucking nothing, you catch mewtwo. wow.
