Old smugleaf fits Cheren way too well, what with similar expressions and how Cheren looks down on Bianca before they even get their starters. Bianca has Emboar in the anime and one of two manga, plus Tepig's line is the most derpy of the three and fits her well since it's probably the worst of the three fire-fighting starters. Plus, Samurott is the one of the three that could most conceivably beat the starter it's weak to, both via the Ice Beam TM like other starters and Megahorn in its level up moveset, so it fits the one of the three who would become champion.

I thought Hau and Decidueye is a perfect fit. Hau is trying to become stronger and braver, and Decidueye personalities are they flip out at the slightest thing that shocks them. It'd fit with both of them trying to buck the other up.
