Psychic types are very good right now, despite being in a tight spot last gen. Lele, M-Medi, M-Zam, and Hoopa-U are among the most powerful pokémon in OU, specially with the introduction of Psychic Terrain and nerfs to Knock Off and Sucker Punch. Psychic types don't need any kind of buff for now.

This is true, on second thought.

I'd like to believe that the type itself is still somewhat underwhelming but it's just the mons themselves with the abilities and stats that pull it through to be decent, but I'm not sure.

I think Psychic should be SE on Fairy, but not resist it.
Currently, Fairy has only "two way" weaknesses, and needs something else to fuck it's day up.
It even fluffs acceptably well

Honestly my concern is more Fairy than Psychic. Psychic has its problems, and while gaining a SE against another highly prevalent type is a nice buff, you can at least argue that Psychic types have to deal with Dark, and must rely on Focus Meme to deal with them.

The only other real potential downside is Steel. I'm not sure if Steel would become a bigger problem since it is now needed to resist one more big thing, or if it would more-or-less neutralize, since the heat is off of it to deal with Faries.

I lean that way as well. Mega Alakazam is the only one of those that isn't riding a wave of other OP bullshit unrelated to type
