If you don't gimp yourself then every single gym leader, elite four member, champion and rival are ridiculously easy, to the point that you can't even tell differences in difficulty.

When you add rules then you start seeing which gym leaders still remain easy as fuck and which start becoming a challenge.
Personally I think the normal nuzlocke rules and battle style set are a must if you want to have an enjoyable experience with the main Pokemon games, and no healing during battle and preventing your mons from overleveling become musts too once you realize how easily exploitable those mechanics are even in nuzlockes.

Geodude is not what I would call good, it just happens to be an amazing matchup for the first gyms in the Johto games. Later in the game it's actually a risky Pokemon to use because it has two 4x weaknesses and can't take special hits well.
It's frankly boring to just breeze through those first gyms regardless of the rules you're playing with, so it's easier just to ban it until after Whitney or Morty than adding more and more rules until it becomes fair even with Geodude.
The point of a nuzlocke is to create a suitable level of difficulty for your skill. If banning a couple Pokemon makes it a more challenging yet fair experience, so be it.
