Hello /shw/. Just wanted to say thanks. I am not a shiny hunter and never hunted, but reading your stories, your success, your fails, has given me hope. I had a problem. I never played HGSS. I have both, but only my brothers played them. I needed something to motivate me, and as I learnt you can see if the starter is shiny I know it is what I needed. I would never had thought it would work without you, but it did, and in around 100 tries! (I didn't count but it was under two hours of soft resetting and I was doing other stuff as well).
Male, brave nature. My least favorite starter overall but I will take it (funny enough I also got it as a starter on SMD, maybe it is destiny).
Called it Golden for now but would like to hear if you have a better nickname for it.

Soft-resetting because you get to hunt for legends, starters, and rare Pokemon. For me, it's almost like the same rush as REs, and it just feels special.

Just got it last night! I ran into pic related while looking for Vanillish on the last stretch of the Alola Dex - fifth SOS call! It's too bad the weather forms aren't shiny but I still feel super lucky for the rare find.

SOS I guess. I haven't tried breeding with MM since I only just got the Charm but at least with SOS I can be pretty passive and do other things unlike joystick Tauros circle hell.

Hey guys, I'm hunting for a shiny Togekiss using the Island Scan on sun, but actually found a granbull instead. I saved since a shiny is a shiny, but now i need to wait 10 hours to recharge the island scan. Is there any way to charge it faster ? modifying the date/time doesn't seem to affect it.

Starting up my first shiny hunt for a Beldum. Got the shiny charm in Moon, gonna use the Masuda method if it's the fastest. What's the exact chances? Bulbapedia states using the Masuda method it's 1/683, but Serebii says it's 1/1024.

Masuda method. It's rewarding(most of the time, aka fuck HA), safe and doesn't require that much attention since it's very mechanical.

Also on a side note for the last 3-4 months I've been hunting nonstop and after Corsola I'll take a break to train the 2 boxes of shinies I hatched. Sometimes I feel sad I don't use the shinies more but I will.

I hatched both a dratini and mareep just in one day. The dratini isn't HA though :(

This. Once you put that last parent in you get your seed, and if that fucker is bad you have no way of knowing. And if you think you have a bad seed. You can try taking the parents out, but for all you know the next egg COULD have been shiny. It's a garbage system and it needs to be fixed. Instead of taking shit out like the pelego glitch they need to fix broken shit like this and the whole "rollover" on SOS hunts.

Probably Hordes, but also probably Random Encounter. Soft Resets are a good one too, because if you have a rubberband, it's more mindless. Especially on a Game Boy Micro, because you only need to press one button.

Meaning that if I, theoretically, SR at the same speed every time I would never hit that shiny frame.

It's been a while since I SOS chained but you don't need heal pulse. Iirc you just knock out whichever mon has been calling for the SOS every once in awhile unless it's a different mon than what the battle was initially with. For example to find Mareanie you have to start with a Corsola so you would wait until there are two Corsola and knock out the one that's been in the battle longer. Leppa berries are a must and you should probably use a Smeargle with Recycle for hunting. Adrenaline orb is of course a must as well and having more than one can save on PP since using a second orb when there isn't an SOS does nothing and doesn't waste your orb. It helps to save before looking to start a chain in case you reach the chain limit without finding the shiny so you can SR to get your berries back. I can't remember what the chain limit is but it may have been mentioned somewhere in the thread or a quick google search should give you the answer. Also Iirc paralyzing the wild mon should stop it from calling for SOS when you find the shiny but I may be wrong about that. Good luck hunting

For anyone curious, shiny Pokemon exist in PBR because NPCs' Pokemon are randomly generated, so there's a 1/8192 chance of getting one, unlike the main games which prevent this from happening.

There's a way to actually get a shiny Pokemon in PBR, but the process of getting them is really tough.

It rerolls trainer IDs after capture, and since Pokemon's shininess is determined by that it disappears most of the time. Trading doesn't do that so your mons are safe

When USM was announced I decided to start breeding again to make a shiny in-game team, and somehow got a shiny sandshrew, dratini, and mareep all in like 30 hours. Although I was dumbass and tried to soft reset the game and swap the sandshrew into a different Pokemon, but fucked up the Masuda Method and lost it.

I think my copy of the game has a benevolent curse... at the very start of the game, I went to Ten Carat Hill and found a shiny carbink and a shiny machop like two minutes apart, at full odds, first encounter. I didn't even know that carbink was shiny at first, since I'd never seen one before.

I just picked Sneasel because I like it and I never used it in Colosseum.

As for the time it would take to find shiny Kyurem, it could take 1 afternoon or even a week, which was the longest i hunted for a legend shiny that being Latias. How does smeargle work for hunting via SOS battles? His stats are fairly low

Give him Recycle, Recover, False Swipe, and some damaging move, and make it hold a Leppa Berry. I advise a move that will always hit because some wild pokemon use sand-attack and it's annoying. Find the pokemon you want to chain, False Swipe + Orb, waste turns till it calls out a pokemon, faint it if it's not a shiny, rinse and repeat. Use recycle when you use your Leppa berry, Recover to keep yourself alive. Smeargle is only good because you don't have to stock pile berries or healing items otherwise you can use whatever pokemon you want as long as you've got someone that has False Swipe.

I saw Junichi Masuda at a grocery store in Osaka yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Shiny Charms in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to have a complete Pokedex first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the charms and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any shiny infetterence,” and then turned around and flashed an Oval Charm at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each charm and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yelling "hahaha i dont really know" really loudly.

I'm just too lazy and want to move on to do it properly.

Not really. To best shiny chain you need:

>A move that can reliably OHKO your target (by level 50 that can be pretty much anything)

Just start the SoS chain with one enemy. Use an A. Orb, if it calls for help, KO the non shiny. If it doesn't, just use another A orb, the game won't consume the item. and after about five or so not shiny, switch to the next SOS by false swiping that and KOing the chain start. Use leppa berries if you run out of PP, use status curing berries if you need to.

Does chain fishing exist in SM?
Assuming you use suction cups and the only way to break it is by getting at item.

Chain fishing is just too easy when you only need 20 chains in a row to reach max shiny probability.
Having the chain break with an item would make it more of a challenge.
