You know what? I think OP is right. Whether we like it or not, Pokemon's changed since X and Y and from the looks of it, this is how it is now. It'll never have the same type of charm it used to because of the era we live in when everything is fast paced and rushed. But I think the sooner you accept that, the easier it is to just enjoy the games for what they are or like OP said, just find a new series altogether and leave Pokemon in the past. But it's not all bad. The core gameplay of battling and catching has never really changed since the 90s so at least it's better than having GF fuck it up by making it a weird, action game or something. And Game Freak hasn't removed the ability to transfer Pokemon to the next games yet like back in the Gen 2 fiasco so things could be worse.

However that Gengar nerf wil always be unforgivable and is a bad omen to how they'll handle changing Pokemon stats

at least gen 6 and 7 were better than gen 5

I like every game, and Gen6 was great for me, especially ORAS.

The story definitely is more mature in BW. DPPt is arguable.
