Scyther and Pinsir were supposed to be rivals, and they were both supposed to have evolutions in gen 1 but those got scrapped. Pinsir's evolution eventually got reworked into heracross in gen 2, and scyther's into scizor, but they decided Heracross was too different from pinsir to be an evolution but kept scizor and from that point they were no longer really rivals.
