It doesn't help that the other Fire types in Johto have it pretty shafted barring legends, so Cyndaquil has a huge advantage if you want one.

Fire stones can either get given to you when you're part way in Kanto, or you have to wait on one random person to call you to say "hey I got this stone, you want it?" which also applies to other stones like Water and Leaf which is a whole other issue. So the likes of Growlithe, Vulpix and Eevee evolving through them were a rare thing.

Then there is the fact other Fire types from gen 2 being located in Kanto also, so Houndour and Slugma aren't much of an option either. Then you're just sort of left with Magby that might hatch from an egg/Magmar as a rare encounter in the burnt tower.

I like gen 2 but there were a lot of unfortunate flaws.

I don't think it's supposed to be full biped. The sprites usually shown have it hunched forward and upright in a way that makes it look like it's supposed to move around on all fours. I feel like I've seen it do this in game somewhere, but I'm not entirely sure.

Feraligatr isn't really a cool Pokémon. He's more of a tough/bara Pokémon like Incineroar. A cool Pokémon would be something like Sceptile, Greninja, or Decidueye.

However I have huge nostalgia for Cyndaquil's line. If I wind up playing through GSC again there's no doubt I'll be doing Thunderpunch Typhlosion for the umpteenth time.

You need to backtrack for Slowbro once you get Surf or grind up a Slowpoke to level 37 (which is annoying in Johto). Quagsire is comparable but is also quite slow and will slow things down. Totodile and its evolution line are still better as a choice overall. Also, you still have no reason to pick Cyndaquil unless you want to go full autism and only grind it up and solo runs don't really mean much for how good a Pokemon is relative to everything else.

Quagsire's not gonna be slowed down by Twave like the other two. Also gets EQ naturally, in case you had something else you wanted to teach it to. The obvious choice is to pick Chikorita, box it, and laugh as your rival now has an ineffective Typhlosion that gets instagibbed by EQ

It does when you have a base speed of 35. If it was something like 60 I'd be less inclined to say it matters but if you're not powerleveling Quagsire and raising a team of 3-4 Pokemon you're going to feel the speed loss.

Why would you use Amnesia? The only problematic special moves they've got is Blizzard and Outrage. Just Ice Punch them with literally anything near their level (Feraligatr, Kadabra, Nidoking, literally any other water type if you opt out of Feraligatr).
