Because the writers don't know what to do. Don't know how to pace trials and Grand Trials so they just stick them one after another. They put Ash in school but don't actually show the school aspect, and most of the time it's just the kids in class talking to each other. We barely see other classmates, or even teachers for that matter. For some reason the only person taking the Island Trial Challenge is Ash and maybe Gladion, who was just thrown in out of nowhere with no information besides "hey i exist and im lillie's brother". And since the Island Trial Challenge barely ever gets mentioned as is, there's no sense of urgency or progression, therefore, there's nothing to look forward to.

The Pokemon also have little to no personality if they aren't Ash's. They are all either generic or don't exist. These filler and "Focus" episodes are terribly boring because literally nothing happens of note and as opposed to development, it just seems like all the side characters are gifted something for no reason.

And then the severe lack of battles. 8 battles, not including TR or Team Skull. 2 of them against Tapu Koko, and another 2 being Trials. So that means there have been only been 4 non-plot related battles in 30 episodes. That's disgusting.

Seeing Ash being somewhat skilled in battle again after his noobish years in BW was great, but XY is nowhere as good as its fans try to paint it.

Didn't like how Serena, Clemont and Bonnie were basically Ash's cheering squad. And the shipping, well, that was just ridiculous to me. Not funny at all.

The lack of a proper rival for Ash until Alan made his proper debut in the series was also a let down. Tierno and Trevor were useless. Serena's rivals were all a joke and they were never treated seriously or seem as competent, which made the TriPokalon arc even worse.

Mandy's episode was OK because he was a cunt and I liked seeing him get his shit kicked in, but an untrained Krabby from Route 25 should not have had a shits show against Mandy's evolved and trained Pokémon. Untrained Muk dominating was also bad, but at least that was more believable due to it being evolved and against a Belsprout.
