The biggest improvement Emerald had over Ruby/Sapphire was the post-game (most notably the Battle Frontier), which was an additional area that Game Freak either didn't have enough time to implement or were too lazy to implement.

The biggest improvement Platinum had was the expanded Pokedex, which is something Game Freak will almost certainly keep if they remake Platinum (seeing as they expanded the Pokedex in both HGSS and ORAS). It will probably lack a Battle Frontier again though.

I'd rather have a double screen'd system, no matter the graphics, to preserve the feel of the region rather than a shoehorned remake on a home console.
