except pokemon started a game with barebones story telling, it wasn't really until gen V did the story telling started to kick up and it's just getting more intrusive each gen.

we're still far from MGS4 levels of interactive movie, but at least MGS was cinematically driven since the start (barring MG 1&2, which weren't 'solid')

There are games like Final Fantasy or the Tales series if you want an epic overarching story. Pokemon was meant to just be a simple monster catching game. Have you ever replayed through Sun and Moon yet? It's a fucking slog, almost unbearable whereas I can still replay the first several gens to this day despite several dozen playthroughs already.
