Also the problem with the ''soulless character's interaction'' came from the MC not reacting like everyone else did, all of the other characters have more than enough expression to make them look like regular human beings, portraits like those are totally unnecessary and out of place

If you actually think this is an improvement then you are the cancer that is killing both Pokemon and Fire Emblem. The soulless character interactions stem from the shitty writing and the protagonist's vacant expression throughout the game. Putting a character portrait is just a way of distracting players from the fact that the developers couldn't be bothered to do proper character animations in 3D.

Portraits give a great help in a character development something that could be helpful in Lillie's story, it also did well in Conquest, even worked fine in B/W you have no point.

What makes OP's pic bad is that Sun and Moon's camera angles don't have portraits in mind. Along with that, the portrait used in the image gets in the way of what's going on behind it.
Other games that use portraits, if done correctly, still have the characters express themselves through models, but have the portraits show the character's facial expression. Here, the character speaking is slumped forward, talking to the player character, which shows his body language, and the upset portrait shows his face.
Even the side series Pokemon games sometimes make use of portraits, like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. That game also does a decent job at it by making them small, so they can be placed in areas that don't detract from what's going on.
