It's linear, yes, but Unova has actual dungeons and other locations with some map complexity. Dragonspiral Tower, Twist Mountain, Clay Tunnel, and more.

I fucking adore B/W2. Theyre the only games outside of gen2 that i could just replay over and over and over.
B/W were my least favorite games of the series, and nearly ruined the franchise for me. It felt the the worst kind of soft reset of the franchise.

Pokemon has and will always be a kiddie game, but it FELT like i was playing a game that was much less a "seek out the world ye child of wonderlust" than a "FRIENDSHIP LMAO".

Obviously this only got worse in Gen 6 and 7, but thats not my point, because i expect it now. Gen 5 soured me hard to pokemon. But when i played W2 for the first time, i had a great time, the starting areas felt really fresh and unique, and even though UNLEASHMYAUTISM is the only character in pokemon i actually hate, it didnt ruin the ride. It had great pokemon variation with the ability to catch stuff like mareep, rioulu, the babymons, and eevee all before the second gym, hidden grottos remain my single favorite mechanic in pokemon and are the single /comfy/ thing in the franchise. I could go on and on and on about how much i fucking love these games. I dont think id been excited to face the E4 like i was in W2 since id been a kid playing Ruby.

And when the credits were over id actually felt like Id come to the end of an adventure, which i hadnt felt before then since the first round of Gen 3, and have yet to feel since.

I think what made BW series so good in the end was the variety of pokemon provided in BW and how good the dex was in BW2. But at the end what brought it home was the lore and story of black and white series. We see lore and history in previous gen games but BW was the series that executed well and was remember the most about, plus it was the first gen that had random wifi battles.
