I've come close to understanding a few fetishes I don't have. I spent a good deal of time looking into amputation fetishes, more because I picked it out of a hat than anything else.
Typically, I found that most people who had it tended to focus on the helpless aspect of it, and a sizable portion weren't even in to the guro aspect.
Now, I only had personal testimony to work with, and it's possible that even if this trend is bunk, amputation is an outlier, and it still doesn't explain a few of the others who gave other reasons, it did weakly confirm that there actually was an underlying cause. There definitely is a divide and you even I think have people who are more into it for the smell than the feet themselves, but I think it's possible to appreciate the act of smelling without being submissive about it or hoping for a really bad odor.
