They've literally done this since Gen 1. Pokemon Blue was originally the third, "finished" version of the Japanese Red and Green. They updated Red to Blue's standards for release in the west.

Now, I wasn't on any gaming websites when Emerald came out in 2005 a year after the DS, but I bet people were spouting all the same shit you are today. All the same reasons apply there as well, and that Nintendo wasn't expecting the DS to be even close to how popular it was. Don't forget that Crystal was bundled with the GBA when both were new despite being a GBC game. They've always been doing this, why is anyone surprised?

They aren't fucking stupid to release the game on Switch. Have you heard about Switch stock problems in Japan? Shops only get about 25k Switch units every week. If it will be going on like this Japanese Switch userbase will not exceed 2 millions when we reach November. What the fuck is the point of making game for a console that is impossible to buy?
