I'd be very surprised if USUM doesn't have gyms. Possibly as postgame, but they'll be in there somewhere.

Hope not, totem battles are better.
The only thing I miss are gym puzzles.

I'd rather have more trails.

I'm hoping there will be both, and actually I think there's a very good chance that there will be. They're not going to get rid of trials and totems, but they're also not going to ignore the strongly hinted gyms in SM. My guess is trials in the main game (probably some different ones, plus an eight one for Mina), then gyms in the post-game.
