Mediocre game, but a strict improvement from DPPtHGSS, not that that's saying much. If you've played gen 6 and/or 7, you'll be underwhelmed. Otherwise you'll likely have a good time. Unova is probably the blandest region with the worst music but it has excellent Pokemon variety and an EXP system that keeps things fairly even keeled if not particularly challenging.

HM slaves are the Pokemon you keep around in your party throughout the game to get through it. For optional areas in this game you would be backtracking, and from that you only need the HM Pokemon during the optional portion and not the whole playthrough.
