The design that the Anon posted came out later but I don't know when. When The Pokémon Company advertised the Virtual Console releases last year, they used the set of artwork from the OP in Japan, which came out with Red and Green in 1996, and used the set of artwork from the one that Anon posted for the Western promotions.

+10 Atk did fuck all for Nidoking because he's strictly a special attacker.
The stat buffs they did in gen VI are often pretty weird and inconsistent. For the Nidos, it seems they didn't like that they turned into special attackers with Sheer Force and tried to rectify that, but they failed because Nidoking's Earthquake is still weaker than his Earth Power.

Just make him faster. That's all. Seriously, base 105 speed on his existing stat spread and move pool would be damn good

There's nothing wrong with Nidoking. Solid mon viable in competitive play. His stats are a bit low but fucking nothing wants to switch in to this guy. Great BP target, too.

That said, a Mega would be most welcome.
