They really should have just wrapped up Ash with the XY anime. It was the perfect time.

The movies are bombing in theaters, SM's ratings are painfully low in the first year of a new series, Ash's character and SM's meme story is going nowhere, the show is over 20 years old, etc.

They had ONE chance to salvage the anime and give it an ending once and for all...and they blew it. Now us pokemon anime fans are laughing stocks for following a show for 20 years with no payoff.

I am just holding out for a chance that we'll see Guzma in the anime. Not an avid watcher, but fuck, that's all it'd take to get me watching.

Man could anyone ever predict the anime would turn into this one day? If a decade ago you showed people a random episode of the SM anime, they would probably think you were showing them a parody or some American cartoon spinoff of Pokemon or something. They would have laughed if you said it was the main anime.

Even when the anime was poor before during the bad filler stretches of Johto or parts of BW, never would I have imagined it'd turn into this.

I am just holding out for a chance that we'll see Lana's bare ass in the anime. Not an avid watcher, but fuck, that's all it'd take to get me watching.

I'm sorry, but I think maybe children just want to see some pokemon battles rather than seeing Ash or any human character for that matter do some obnoxious/unsettling/shocking face towards a not-so-common situation for the seventh time.

It's already enough to have Ash not look like he's matured at all despite all these seasons, but the writers still have this undying need to make the audience care about Ash even though we've already seen over and over the non-existent payoff that there will be after every season, which makes one care even less about him. If you're gonna do that shit to him every time Game Freak shits out a new game and a new season is born, at least make the pokemon battles more prominent. Adding the school shit was simply adding more insult to injury. The only people that care about the human characters are rabid shippers and loli fuckers at this point.

I have sat through it all, but not in one go. I have to keep stopping and coming back to it. BW DA was still worse. Literally took me 3 attempts to get through, and it's only 20 fucking episodes.

It was a mixed bag overall, some Johto fillers were very good or funny, especially the Team Rocket fillers back then, but others extremely boring or dull. It basically varied on an episode to episode basis, most of the TR/Wobbufett fillers were gold, as well as some of the battle-centric or Brock ones, but not the COTD ones.

The very last 25ish episodes of Johto are also pretty good. Claire gets a 5-part Gym arc and Charizard returns for the first time since early Johto (besides Movie 3), most of the Larvitar episodes are good especially that fantastic Unown episode, and then the league and ending was pretty good too.

Tomioka started taking charge of the series in late Johto after Shudo left and that's why it vastly improved already.

The Whirl Islands sub-arc was good as well. Splitting it into dub seasons, Johto Journeys started decent before starting to wain, Johto League Champions was unmitigated filler garbage with the exception of a few episodes sprinkled here and there and Master Quest brought the show back to form, but it never fully recovered from the Celebi movie executives' bullshit.

After he started writing the movie, they faxed him a bunch of pictures of new Pokemon that had just finished getting designed (Entei, Unown, Pichu, and the three others) so he worked them into the script. I don't even think Entei was meant to be part of a trio at the time.

Sometimes I think it's nothing short of a miracle the anime never did do an original trio reunion in the 15 years since the end of the Johto saga. I mean that's something some people always thought would happen, even if it was just for one special or movie, or an episode, but it never did. Even Misty's cameos in AG were her integrated into the Hoenn group, or just a Pallet Town visit with Tracey, so the original trio never did have any proper reunion together.

Not at all, SM while not heavy in battles which is somewhat disappointing after XY/XYZ, has given us a bunch of different and memorable episodes so far. The only episode that I didn't really care for was the first Sophocles focused episode. The rest though have been a lot of fun.

Delia coming back, killing off Mooland, the baseball and swimsuit episodes, the teases of AshPikachu.

I love the cast, location, and personalities. The only thing that would make it better is if battles weren't as rare as they currently are. I'm really looking forward to the Take Good Care of Pikachu episode.

It's not the Pokemon we've known for the last 20 years, it's vastly different from OS/AG/DP/BW/XY which is something that not everyone is a fan of.

The reason I enjoy SM is BECAUSE of how different it is. Sure I enjoy watching Ash travelling around acquiring badges, fighting trainers, and catching Pokemon, but the in between of those things has always been kind of lacking.

I never really cared about contests, the companions goals of becoming an "X-Type Pokemon Master", and Brock and Cilan really didn't do anything. That's not to say I don't like Brock, I love that motherfucker. But for the most part the episodes in between Gym Battles or plot relevant episodes have been generally uninteresting or forgetful. The first time I actually gave a damn about the companions Ash traveled around with was the XY gang, but like XY I actually care about SM's core group.

Now, for SM there are essentially 4 Gym Leaders, or in this case Kahunas. Hala, Olivia, Nanu, and Hapu. Compared to the usual 8 a region has, SM needs to have a bunch of filler to fluff up the season. If there is 1 Kahuna fight for every 30 episodes in SM that would take us to episode 120 which is what I'm expecting. If we keep getting fun and different filler episodes in between Kahunas/Totem Pokemon I'm perfectly okay with the way the series is progressing. 30 episodes into SM and the cast and world has been developed very well for a Pokemon series. Instead of a 1 off cities or towns we've had a ton of recurring characters and location revisits which makes Alola feel like an actual thriving region.

If Akala and Ula Ula get as much exposition as Melemele Alola will probably be my favorite region adapted by the anime.

From Kanto - Johto I cared about Ash, Misty, and Brock. They were my childhood and who I grew up with. Ultimately though, Ash was the one I really cared about. His fights, his Pokemon, those were what kept me interested as a kid.

I entered that "to cool for Pokemon" age after Johto ended, mainly because I couldn't figure out at what time the anime was airing and on what day so I basically forgot about it. I played the games, but stopped caring about the show. That lasted until early Best Wishes. Every now and then, after my family got internet, I'd check in to see how Ashs journey was progressing. I wouldn't watch the show but I'd check to see his team, if he'd won a league and so on. I was interested, but it was always a passing thought of "hey, I wonder where Ash is right now?"

So I never really cared about May or Dawn because they weren't the group I paid attention to, I knew their game counterparts but didn't care for their anime versions. Then BW came around and that's about the time when I started getting back into Pokemon, well it was really B2W2 when I got back into Pokemon. By the time that they released I had started watching the BW series, I hated it, but I kept up with current events and finally started watching the show weekly when Best Wishes Season 2 began. At that point I hated the Best Wishes series and Iris so I didn't give a damn about them.

Things are different now though, I've long since caught up on everything that I had missed during my "to cool" phase, watched past movies, series, read into lore caught up on old series. I love the anime, that's really all there is to it.

I think most people like or are indifferent to the SM girls and Kiawe, it's really just Sophocles few people like. The problem is it's hard to get invested in them since they're generally just there as classmates or supporting characters. I like Mallow but mostly just because her design than personality or anything.

I guess I should rephrase that, when I barely paid any attention to the anime, May, Dawn, and Iris's stories is when I didn't particularly care about them.

They weren't on my radar, at that time I only cared about how Ash was progressing.

Iris I just don't give a damn about even now. She's my most disliked Pokegirl in the anime. Goals of being a "Dragon Master" is to vague, especially when she does nothing to pursue it. I'm not going to go on a rant about Iris and Best Wishes though.

May and Dawn, I do care about. When I was growing up I didn't, now though I do. I like their characters, their designs, their personalities, and how they interacted with Ash. Their goal though, Contests, has never really interested me. The appeal round was always kind of "meh" and the contest battles were always the interesting bit. But even then the contests lasted way to long. To many episodes where we saw the same thing happen. When more episodes are dedicated to contests rather then Ashs gym battles I don't particularly agree with that.

There's a lot to my relationship with the Pokemon series that influences how I see the Pokegirls and series as a whole as autistic as it sounds. It'd take way to long to explain and this isn't somewhere I should blog about my life. Basically, to sum everything up. I hate Iris and Best Wishes. I like May and Dawn, May more-so, I've never really like the goal of being a specific type Master, and contests weren't my cup of tea.

Totems appear to be less important then Kahunas, essentially a "test your strength" challenge that decides if the trainer can fight a Kahuna or not.

We need to see another Totem fight before we can properly judge it.

The reason I didn't include totems in the "Gym Leader" ranking was because how you don't move on to the next "Gym" in this case Kahuna until you defeat the previous Kahuna. So basically like how you don't move onto one gym until you defeat the one before it.

Goodness gracious what happened? Just a year ago an attitude like that would get you crucified in these threads.

And also, there are Totem Trials too which people like you seem to keep forgetting exist. Hala made his first appearance in episode 9 and his last in episode 10, and he's the kahuna of the island. That's fucking crazy. Episode 9 was the episode where Ash fought Totem Gumshoos, and 10 was when he had his Grand Trial against Hala, which is also bad. Matsui can't into pacing.

Hala was introduced at an okay time but the battle happened way too soon. In the episode 11, we see Ash training with Rowlett using the Normalium-Z, yet in the Grand Trial episode he claimed he practiced already but off screen. Why couldn't we have seen that scene of training before the actual battle instead of after? How about some of those filler episodes being spread between the Totem Trial and the Grand Trial?

Having to wait 20+ episodes between a gym battle is bad enough but when there are other things Ash could be preparing for and instead we get filler and "focus" episodes instead is a real pain in the ass. They barely even show any focus on the school part of the show.

I get people like the laidback feeling of this saga and how Ash actually is acting his age for once but I don't understand how anyone can prefer this to any of the previous sagas we've gone through. Even Johto wasn't THIS bad in the beginning.
