I like to think of it more as an in-universe meme, of sorts.

Classic Sinnoh mythos talk about the Egg that became Arceus manifesting in a void of nothing, and the potential that sprung from its creation. It's not that they literally don't know where Pokemon Eggs come from, it's more the people of that world referencing their own tradition and culture.

Lack of evidence for a claim doesn't necessarily = evidence. Just because it's never shown or word of god never mentions it does not always mean that it is true or untrue. Neither side has a strong case. The hints in the game suggest it's impossible, though.
