I don't know why people focus only on the percentages to make claims about how 'objectively shit' a starter is. Even though Chespin got the lowest percentage at 19%, that still means over 10,800 people liked it and picked it. And that's not even taking into account how the Pokemon fanbase has so much more than the 50k votes shown for each poll, so there might be several thousands of other Chespin fans we don't know about. Chespin isn't the most popular, but it is by no means unpopular. (I didn't pick Chespin btw, just using it as an example).

Up to this day, i'm still surprised that Froakie got a higher gen-wise pickrate than FUCKING CHARIZARD. Even as someone that loves Blastoise and Venusaur, i don't think i've met anyone in real life that didn't go with Charizard at least on their 1st playthrough. Though i guess you could say the same about Greninja.

It doesn't matter what people pick first. It can help them like it, but it won't necessarily be their favorite. My first Pokemon was a Pikachu. I hate Pikachu. Even if everyone picked Zard first, it doesn't matter. What matters is what they liked.

As for those results, they're quite easily explainable. All Kanto starters are loved, while many hate Chesnaught. Despite being uglier, Venusaur is still leagues above Chesnaught in popularity. In the poll that Greninja came first in, Chesnaught was literally the last in all fully evolved starters, coming in at around 250th place. Even behind Meganium by 30 Pokemon. Which helps Greninja. Because its competition is worse, it helps Greninja shine brighter.

I consider myself a fairly big Chesnaughtfag. I love the Pokemon, it's my second my favorite Grass-type. But if I had to decide between Greninja and Chesnaught, I too would give my vote to Greninja.

I guess you have a point, though i've asked about starters and nobody i know regrets getting Charizard or Greninja. They have super high attachment rate in an unarguable way. When Chesnaught was leaked, i expected him to amass a substantial following, especially after how bland Delphox turned out. He's not my fave, but i don't think he deserves all of the hate.

And they don't have to. You don't have to hate or regret picking Zard or Greninja to like the others. As I just mentioned, I love Chesnaught. I also love Greninja, even more than Chesnaught. Similarly, I love Blastoise, it's a turtle with cannons, with a great design, but I like Zard more.

You don't have to regret your first choice. You can still like what you picked, but nothing stops you from liking something else more.
