I always use the water starter but I first picked chesnaught because frokie was too popular and shilled and a donutsteel. I was a late adopter to X and could see what had become of frobable.
Then I realized Funelcake was the objectively better choice

Nah, it's true. You get Water-type starters right smack dab at the beginning of the game, they all have good learnsets, and they all generally smash through most of the leaders on their own. Issues are mitigated very easily in almost all cases and the Water starters put in more work simply because of how early they're obtained.

That's not to say other Water-types are useless though. like I said water is just too good

Checked. They do, but there's also the issue that Fire-types and Grass-types are simply unnecessary in the first three gens. Gen 4 poses a greater teambuilding problem but DPPt has completely shit distribution anyway and Empoleon's typing makes up for it. Gen 5 has hugely better options for the Fire and Grass-types, and in XY it's a bit more balanced.

Should've phrased it better, but I'm not referring to overleveling. Water-type starters generally have the easiest time with things regardless.

You're right that games give you a large variety of water-types to choose from (mostly) though.
