I added some cherry blossom trees to Glint City and Route 3. Really pleased with how it looks now. They look even better in game.

Also, I've decided to start working on a one Gym demo, so this is about as far as I'm going to be working on maps for now.
>>
>>32634368
Insanely good-looking map but that one 1-tile-high bridge doesn't work because the player is taller than 1 tile. Either remove the bridge or somehow have it be 2 tiles high.
>>
>>32634445
Much better! The petals on the ground are a great touch. One thing, the riverbank with the green Fisher looks bare. Maybe add some wild grass, or a lone tree with a hidden item. Or move him up the middle of trat stretch instead of the very bottom.

What would /heg/ prioritize in an online multiplayer Pokémon game to make it most interesting?

- Getting ranks (GL, E4, Champ, Team positions)
- Finding rare Pokémon
- Combat with other players
- Running through PMD-like dungeons
- Just exploring and adventuring
Or something entirely different?

All of these are already in the game to some extent, we'd just like to know which to prioritize for the most appealing multiplayer game.
>>
>>32634870
Good sprites :^)

To be more serious, I'd love to be able to just explore and solve puzzles with friends, find secrets, rare Pokémon or items, go on a journey together and battle against each other from time to time. Maybe you could have a system where you can friend a player and then both of you can engage in double battles against double battle NPCs (or other players), for instance.
>>
>>32634941
People really don't like our sprites, it seems. There really is no other solution for our 32x32 grid, unfortunately.

All of your suggestions are what we initially wanted to prioritize with the game, so it seems we're headed in the right direction.

Only thing is that combat takes places in the overworld and it's pretty simple at this point; there is no turn based combat.

We'll just have to keep expanding and refining and occasionally asking /heg/ I suppose. Cheers senpai.

The large cave entrances look impressive, but then there's almost no soil above them for the grass and trees. Also, the coral/Corsola lining the route are cute, but then I expect there to be an actual coral reef nearby. (Is there? Maybe via Diving?) Overall it looks nice, fun to explore, lots of different environments in one map.

I've been stuck wondering how I should go about my hack now. There's some sorts of ASM/C stuff I wanted to do for my hack but I find myself sometimes struggling to accomplish what I'm trying to do and I feel like if I ever ask for help from the small portion of people that do know how to handle these things I'm no better than stupid beggar from some forum who wants someone to do his whole hack for him. I've looked into pokeruby and found that I don't have quite the affinity for decompilation and am wondering if my contribution would be negligible compared to just going back to working on my hack directly. I've also considered going to Essentials since my hack is very important to me and I can't go on without knowing that I haven't abandoned it like some useless idea and that I make something out of that idea, realize that idea and get to enjoy it and provide enjoyment for the people I'm close to that are looking forward to it. Now I'm just confused. I don't know what I should do. Should I focus on decompilation? Beg for help? Just make assets and wait the long wait for pokeruby? Switch to essentials despite the fact I've loved focusing on ROM hacking? I have no idea, but I love my hack so I can't sit by and let it die because of my incompetence.

Help me, /heg/.
>>
>>32644600
What are you wanting to do with ASM/C that requires a disassembly? Surely whatever it is is also possible without one?

If you want to learn and aren't just asking to be spoon fed people will most likely be willing to help you. Beginner questions aren't going to bother anyone as long as they aren't something easily found in a tutorial.

Basically I was trying to do some stuff with Headbutt trees and sideways stairs. I'm an Emerald hacker so sideways stairs aren't available for me yet. I've done my own research into both and I'm working out some stuff and I've done a couple function rewrites in C, but I still have trouble whether it's the workload or actually pulling it off. I'm a breederfag in the mainline games on the side and I might be trying to do real life stuff soon, but goddamn I love my hack and all the ideas I've came up with along with my friends.

Also I love the idea of collaboration with other people interested in helping in a project but I'm horrifically disorganized and disassemblies are very good for that kind of stuff but it's a long term investment that may not be worth it. Lack of organization in general really slows me down which fucks me up. No matter what I try eventually I get messy again.

Basically I'm just pissed that my own personal flaws are getting in the way of my hack. My hack feels like an outlet for me to vent my problems with the games these days without complaining or being a bother, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to carry it on my own because of my laziness but I'm not really that close with much people who are really into ROM hacking and/or have the time.
>>
>>32645173
I can see why sideways stairs would be an issue in Emerald, that's quite a lot of code to port, and it'd be hard to convince someone to do all of that for you. You could ask some of the ASM savvy people how you would go about porting things from one ROM to another, maybe a simpler example would give you an idea of how it's done.

Would your headbutt trees work using a simple script implementation? You can get identical functionality to the official games using a script editor if that's what you're going for.

Every little bit helps with a disassembly, but from the looks of things it'll be quite some time before the Ruby one leads to an Emerald decompilation.
>>
>>32645304
The sideways stairs code as is is a mess. I'm considering asking someone about a rewrite but I'm not sure if I can do it without being a nag, I'm willing to do research and help with a rewrite if necessary.

As for Headbutt trees I know what you're talking about but I'm trying to do HGSS style where every tree can be headbutted so there'll be case where maps have Rock Smash as well so I need to make an implementation that reads new tables that's similar to the Rock Smash special. I already have the tree tiles triggering a script if the player has a Pokemon with headbutt.

44KB, 640x576px
Does anyone know how to make a map load different custom palettes depending on the time of day? Right now the map is loading a copy of the ice cave palette, but I want it to load a different one when during the day.
>>
>>32645344
It'd certainly be a lot more readable if someone re-wrote it in C. Maybe you could get the guys who did the Emerald battle engine to take a look?

That tree implementation shouldn't be too hard, you could just write a fairly basic ASM routine to read an appropriate entry from your table and use that as the input for the Pokemon encounter special, and the randomization of encounters could be handled by scripting alone.
>>
>>32645764
I asked the guy behind the Emerald Battle engine to try it. He's a close friend of mine and I've worked with him on the battle engine, actually. Every time I ask him for some reason he really doesn't wanna do it.

I might have more luck with an ASM rewrite anyway. Trying to do the Headbutt trees in C for now. What's really getting me down is the idea that there's always going to be something unpolished as I go through because I've got to be a one-man army because most personal friends of mine aren't too skilled in ROM hacking. At least I know a couple drawfags that I'm grateful for.

Edit predef/crystal.asm:LoadSpecialMapPalette, and instead of conditioning on the wTileset value, condition on TimeOfDayPal as well. Look at Polished Crystal's tilesets/palettes.asm:LoadSpecialMapPalette.load_eight_time_of_day_bg_palettes for an example.
>>
>>32645499
Would you consider starting a thread on Pokécommunity's Progressing Hacks forum? It'd be a more permanent place for screenshots, feedback, etc. (And maybe for alpha/beta releases—your YouTube video already looked promising. Did you borrow any code from Prism for that?)
>>
>>32634464

>>32646951
I've thought about it. If people think I should I might, but I just feel like I wanted to have a substantial amount of work done before I started posting on a permanent thread. I used to hack Super Mario World, and the Works in Progress section of the forum was always clogged up with crappy hacks with nothing to show for them. The fact that the /vp/ general is so temporary is exactly why I chose to start posting here.
>>
>>32646951
Also, no. None of that code is lifted from Prism. It took me a few days to figure out, since I'm not really familiar with ASM, but it's all done by hand. I'm actually kinda proud of how it turned out all things considered.

Daily reminder that if your fakemon are just animal + element, you're making a safe, forgettable piece of trash.
>>
>>32649503
Roughly 94 of the original 151 are animal/plant + element, depending on how strict the count is. And many of the others are animal + animal/plant + element (cicada + mushroom + Grass = Paras) or animal + concept + element (turtle + cannon + Water = Blastoise). Some are memorable anyway because they used an uncommon thing (Exeggutor = coconut tree + Psychic, Lapras = pleiosaur + Ice) or executed the concept well (Gengar = shadow + Ghost). And yes, some of Gen 1 *is* forgettable, but if you're a bad designer then adding more stuff into one Pokémon will just produce complicated trash instead of simple trash.

Been reading up on the Pokered diassembly, does anyone know what file affects if a type is special or physical? Only file that involves types that I'm not sure what it does is this one

https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/constants/type_constants.asm

but I don't know how to go about it. Granted, since I want ghost attacks to be special and dragons to be physical I could maybe just switch the places for those types and see what happens.

Any type from fire or lower is special, the way it's defined. Switching ghost and dragon should work, I think.

I personally think 5 should be a limit, but having six isn't the end of the world as long as you don't give six to the earlier Gym Leaders.
I personally think Emerald has the right idea with Gym Leader teams. Starts with teams of three, hits teams of five by the sixth Gym and stays that way.
As to E4 having full teams, that also sounds fine, though if I made a hack I'd give them five just for tradition's sake.
>>
>>32658578
Thank you, that chart is helpful.
>>
>>32658578
What do you think the repercussions would be of having all gym leaders having a party of six when the trainer did as well?
>>
>>32659645
Then it would feel less significant when your rival finally builds a full team and the Elite 4+Champion have large teams. Also, it's hard for the player to have a full team at the first couple of Gyms.

Somehow I got it in me to start a new hack. But is there any sort of hacking base I can get where the pokemon list completely blank? Or do I have to work on blanking everything out by myself?

Also, are there any hacking tools for Mac now?

>when the trainer did as well?
That's just it, the trainer doesn't always have that. I generally don't even catch my second Pokémon for my team until 1-3 badges in, depending on how much I've replayed the game before, and don't get a full party until 5-6 badges in. When I played Moon I had to wait until almost the end of the game to get my Jangmo-o so I was just rolling with 5 'mons (but Sun and Moon just has really, really shit distribution with its new 'mons. Unless you picked Sun, where you can grab Turtonator on the third island before the Electric trial, you can't even get a new Dragon type until Poni Island).

Don't really like how this part of the route is turning out. I like the little lake on top with the fence and the other lake idea having the little grass spot but everything else looks too cramped.

Maybe move the bottom lake down a bit, so the path is wider?

I can post Fakemon, right? Here's a shitty concept doodle compilation of a bacteriophage-based mon I'm working on. I'm currently thinking Electric/Poison or Psy/Poison or something.
Summary of current ideas:
-The mon is a digital/artificial Pokemon like Porygon that represents viruses (Possibly was originally made as a bootleg Porygon)
-Ability is like an ???-type inducing Mummy
-Its TM learnpool is very large because bootlegmon

The floaty arm-like things in some of the doodles are similar to Porygon-Z's. I still need to work on the design a lot though. It would be helpful to get some feedback if possible.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think the diagonal path works very well. All the Hoenn routes* mostly fit to a grid, which avoids large swathes of trees/cliffs/obstacles and lets the player explore as much space as possible. The whole bottom of that map is just filler trees and water. The geography reminds me of Route 117, so maybe take ideas from that? I'm not sure what could fill up the middle area of blank grass; a fence maze, or puddles, or the light grass path.

* http://jay21310.deviantart.com/art/Hoenn-Overworld-Map-313449829
>>
>>32663596
...and I just realized it *is* an upgraded version of Route 117. Oops.
>>
>>32663601
It's alright man. Yeah I have noticed the grid style thought process behind many of the official Hoenn maps but I think for the right side of the map I did a good enough of a job. I'm just trying to shrink everything else on the left down now. As for the very bottom of the map none of that will ever be seen due to the screens restrictions. Only for small portions is it needed so I decided to needlessly fill in everything so I don't look at an empty space.
>>
>>32633648
What are all of these? Are they any good?

What's the best hack to play for a genwunner who wants to play an updated version of FR/LG but with modern improvements, most specifically unlimited use of TMs/move tutors and the modern physical/special attack split?

I'm mostly looking into UltraVioet (which doesn;t appear to have unlimited TMs) and Throwback (which does seem to have them but not all of the nifty features UV has)

I think I got the generalized area down pact! I got rid of the diagonal path and it does in fact look much better and true to the original route.

Looking at the entire image in photo viewer at a smaller size I feel like the only place that needs a touch up is the area with the three trainers in the top left. Kinda lookin empty.

cant do that. stairsare only for one direction and trying to edit the cliff around that would drastically getin the way of a lot of otber places in the map. Wild pokemom in the grass dont change no matter which kind it is. Im thinking of changing that tree in the pond into a secretbase.

Well fuck. I didn't like him when you were getting your first pokemon and I didn't like him after that gym match. I can handle bad grammer or cheesy line from a rom hack, but not someone who this autistic. So anyone has an opinion on this hack?

https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=350926
>>
>>32665075
You should at least give it until after the second gym. I don't think the Mos shows up at every single turn, but he does appear decently often.
I don't know much about Pyrite, but I do know that I hate gyms locking me in after going in to check the levels of the gym trainers. On top of being forced to set and no healing items in battle. And why even nerf the use of X Items? Doesn't seem like much of a purpose there.
But that's just me.
>>
>>32665108
Eh I might, but I will move on to a different hack afterward. Mos doesn't sit right with me, or finding out the character was a champion and starting all over again, or that whole EVAL background story in the game that precede this.

I assume you mean without Essentials, in which case it's terrible. With Essentials, it's easy and there's a lot of resources online, but you'll run into a lot of bugs.

Hilariously enough, a lot of Essentials' lag is from the music. If you set it to play music you add to the resources, instead of the default stuff, battles get a lot smoother for some reason.

So are there no hacks to only remove trading/make the dex completable for gen4+? All I've seen from searching and from the pastebin are rebalance hacks that also happen to make all pokemon catchable as well.
>>
>>32667440
Oh, part of the reason for this is that it lags when loading .midis. And honestly, midis are such low quality anyways that nobody should be using them. There's less lag with .oggs.

Other common sources of lag include map connections, and large maps with lots of events. Planning around these are key.
>>
>>32669450
There's origin platinum for gen IV, but it's buggy and replaces a lot of dialogue with stupid references. Doesn't touch the balancing though.

I also edited Glint City slightly to add a path up to the Grove. The short path is it's own map for now.

Also, I'm not sure if the grove should be optional or not. I'm thinking about putting the Gym Leader at the end and you need to talk to him to make him go to the gym.

It could also just be a place to level up if you aren't confident enough to fight the Gym Leader yet. I'm looking for opinions on this.
>>
>>32671554
>>32671559
The cherry grove looks great! An appropriate location for Fairy types, if you've added that. If the large tree at the top isn't meant to be really special, maybe also use it on the central island. And I think red flowers would look good interspersed with the tall grass. It would help avoid the clear blocks of green among the red.

You could emulate the way Violet City worked: tackle the Gym and the forest in any order, but some kind of roadblock makes you do both before the next route. Could be an HM found in the forest and enabled by the badge. Or just add an arbitrary roadblock, but make it interesting: the small bridge on the eastern route has potential for a good one.
>>
>>32671059
That's really nice, though probably a bit frustrating that there's no easy way to go back once you're on the bottom left corner.
>>
>>32671854
That's intentional, although I can see how it would be annoying. The whole cave is a glorified ledge to make a one-way route, like 132-134 in Hoenn.
>>
>>32670654
>it's buggy and replaces a lot of dialogue with stupid references.

Yeah that's a deal breaker. I guess I'll just have to accept the fact I won't be able to 100% them. Or maybe someday I'll do two full playthroughs and then trade between them.

So I tried starting the emerald rom I was messing with and whenever I try to enter route 1 the game crashes accompanied with a black screen and screeching. Any idea what's up. I didn't even mess with Littleroot or 101. I checked back and forth between the vanilla rom and my custom one but there's no difference.

Are you making sure that the imported maps are the same size or smaller than the original? Also if you're using advance map, make sure you set the free space byte it uses to 0xFF instead of 0, and set free space to start at 0xE3CF64. If you don't it tends to start overwriting things it shouldn't.

I've made a separate thread already, so sorry if I clutter the thread and this might not veen be the right place for it, anyways:

Hey /vp/, I study on the local public university, live with my unemployed single mom and two dogs, she basically dated a guy for a while that stole a bunch of our stuff + money and disappeared. Yes, we went to the police already. I need to raise some money, quick, and found out that a lot of people buy pokemon on my countries' version of e-bay. Anyways, I have my hacked 3DS already, I know that maybe a lot of you guys might hate the fake-pokemons or something, but I don't even have money to go to my classes tomorrow and food will run out in a week unless we start getting loans and let the debts pile up in an unending snow ball. So yeah, I'm kinda desperate.
Can someone guide me through some safe ways to hack in or train up pokemons for trading without raising nintendo flags?
Thanks in advance /vp/

In Essentials it's easy as fuck, it's probably 1 line worth of code if you make an if statement checking if it's lv100 and then replacing the string

In a ROMhack? who the fuck knows lmao

So, before reading this thread and the wikis in the OP, I had no idea what Essentials or RPG maker is, so pardon me for being such a newfag, but is MKXP a viable alternative to RMXP on Linux/BSD platforms? What does it take to play an Essentials game? Because I'm having a whole lot of trouble even grasping what any of this is supposed to achieve.
