I'm sure not many people remember this, with being quite an uninteresting place overall, and especially now with the Wi-Fi shutdown. for a casual playthrough I'd prefer Crystal, since I get autism about natures and abilities. Also, even though I think some of the shortcomings of the earlier gens are kinda charming in hindsight, Crystal fixes some of the annoying things about GS like no early access to evolutionary stones. HGSS are objectively better games in virtually every way. Playing the original Gen 2 means all attacks are determined by type (Fire Punch is Special Attack,) there are no Natures, and certain cool Gen 4 evos for Gen 2 pokemon will not exist (Togakiss, Gliscor, etc.)

The music and atmosphere are doubtless nostalgic for anyone who played them as children, but as a newcomer I really think you'd have more fun with HGSS. It's easily the best of the three remakes so far. You can even unlock the old chiptune tracks at the end of the game which can be played instead of the updated themes.

Only play the originals if you want some insight into the history of Pokemon.

Was Dark Cave a remix of Gen 1 music? I know some of the redone music is kind of hard to notice unless you play both games back-to-back (like the Hiker theme in Gen 2 being the Rocket/mysterious trainer theme in Gen 1) but Dark Cave always seemed like its own thing.
Or maybe you're just referring to the HGSS version, which I think is different enough from the GSC version to have its own appeal.

I've actually only played BW1 and BW2 once each because I don't like deleting save files but the music from that Gen stands out so much to me. Game Freak really mastered the DS audio hardware in Gen 5, just like they did for the Game Boy in Gen 2.
