Explain further.
As for my own tasted,
1. Crystal (mainly due to nostalgia)
2. HGSS (objectively better than Crystal except for the music and graphics, which I prefer Crystal's out of aforementioned nostalgia)
3. Emerald
4. White 2
5. Platinum

I was the same for a while with Diamond. I hadn't played any of my gen 4 games since gen 5 came out so when I decided to revisit Sinnoh I went with platinum. Definitely recommend it if you ever feel like playing gen4 again

You know there's an item in HGSS that lets you change the music to the OG soundtrack, right? Not saying you can't like Crystal better but c'mon

GB Sounds is fantastic in concept but it's really, really bad in execution. It's quite inaccurate, especially with regards to the Gameboy's waveform channel, which they just turned into a third pulse channel, ruining any song that used the waveform's unique sounds for its melody like the National Park theme.
When I first played HGSS I didn't notice anything wrong at all, but then I got into hacking, spent a LOT of time with Gen 2's audio capabilities, decided to replay HGSS (specifically the Drayano hack, which gives you the GB Sounds at the start of the game), turned it on, and was immediately horrified at what I was hearing. It was like going to Disney World and seeing Mickey Mouse take off his head revealing a man in a suit.
Again, it was fantastic in concept, just executed really bad. I imagine a GBA Sounds in ORAS would've worked a lot better because DirectSound is a lot closer to MIDI and the GBC channels don't play a very large role in most songs, but then ORAS half-assed a lot of things so they didn't bother putting a GBA Sounds in the game.

Cool to know, thanks for the insight anon.
Personally I thought HGSS had one of the best soundtracks of any Pokemon game. If anything, FRLG needed GB Sounds.

I've seen a hack somewhere that implements GB Sounds (multiple actually, but one of them was Liquid Crystal and Liquid Crystal's GB Sounds is somehow just as flawed as HGSS's despite the GBA's hardware having everything needed for a 100% accurate GB Sounds), I'll have to try and find it again and see how accurate it is.
And Ho-Oh's theme is pretty fucking great. It's even better ported to the GBC.

Lugia's theme is also good but it's a bit less catchy, which is a shame because I grew up with Silver.

>There are people on this board right now who count XY among their top five favourite Pokémon games
>>32630305
I had more fun playing Y than any game from Gen V and Gen VII. So it is easy to end up at my top 5.
>>32630305
I like XY more for what they could've been than what they are. Most of the pieces for a beautiful picture are there, but several key pieces are missing, and it leaves the puzzle unfinished with even many pieces that are there unable to come together. Simply imagining that completed puzzle, for me, is a greater experience than some other completed ones.

Pretty cool bandcamp. Nostalgia aside I have to agree there was something special about the gameboy music. What are some of the tracks you liked better in GSC?
Here's one from Red that I like a lot better than in FRLG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMCYDDZrAlA

Platinum is a vastly superior version, you should absolutely try it.
