The big fuck up in Ranch was it wasn't compatible with Platinum outside of an update on Japan got, and in no region was it HGSS compatible. If it worked with those games it would have been a fantastic storage system for the generation. It was cheap as shit and had cute little stuff going on.

In the main games, there isn't enough of a bond with your mons, you know? You can battle and collect them, but that's about it. Features like contests and secret bases usually get dropped after a gen or two. I just want to be able to live with them, you know? Amie/Refresh is close, but it's still pretty shallow.

Leaving that aside, Magikarp Jump reminds me of Digimon World Championship for the DS, which is also pretty much catching, breeding and taking your team to tournaments, if you enjoy this you might like that one too. Food is a lot better in the long run. If you keep up with the math between training and food, food should outpace the training at some point as food gets better with upgrades and if you play often. If you too casual to eat food, then Aegislash for the easier time. It's based on playstyle.

So I think I'm fucking up. I just started playing last night and I'm on like the 4th generation already and haven't beaten the quick league.
I thought the higher the JP the higher Magikarp would jump but he's my strongest yet and he's barely scraping by in the mid battles despite having significantly higher jp than the cpu. So am i missing something?

That's odd, in my experience the karp with the highest JP wins 100% of the time

In terms of Cost efficiency, if you want Charizard to match the JP Aegislash and other decorations give, you need to hope Charizard gives you big bags of coins, the bigger the better. Coins go into permanent good/training upgrades which balances itself out. There's a point where Charizard will give you coins that would surpass the speed of JP given by other decorations.Spending coins to get amazing upgrades faster helps you level up magikarp faster which helps the trainer level up faster to achieve level up diamonds to get other decorations. It is pretty hard to max out on upgrades but the coins from Charizard will boost those upgrades which in turn would exponentially help you before getting the Aegislash/shaymin/parasect upgrades.
