Popplio can't really be worth it right? I've only heard of people getting 7 diamonds from it, and even that isn't 100% of the time. If you think about it, even if all you ever got was diamonds (never just getting coins) it would take 500 hours of tapping it as soon as you can (never sleeping or forgetting) for it to start paying off. That's 21 days of obsessing over this game, AND extreme luck before you ever see a net gain. Assuming more realistic settings of getting coins at least a third of the time and not being ready every 7 hours exactly you're probably looking closer to 40 days. Not worth it

Losing isn't bad at all since some events only trigger when you lose. You can regain TP and get coins for example. Also, losing a battle before reaching max level is also a good idea since you always get forced into league battles anyway when reaching max level, which completely ignores the cooldown. It's not much, but usually a few coins extra.

Pretty much, except you sometimes get TP after league matches. I always just do the league as far as I can until I lose, even if not max level, because if you manage to reach max level during the cooldown for losing a match it gets completely ignored, and you get coins (and if lucky an event, with sometimes extra TP) for losing anyway.

How do you get a Magikarp from "events"? What are these events anyway?

Okay, let's do some math. Except for the first (two if you're lucky) berry/ies, a new berry appears every 20 seconds.
In my aquarium, the max amount is 13 berries (I am rank 17, and have the sign up, which is a +1 boost), if we substra, we can calc roughly how much time it'll take to regen all the berries, which is exactly 4 minutes.
This means that for optimal training without having to constantly watch the app for the first (two) berry/ies, you should open the game every 4 minutes to grab all the berries.

I have respect for you not wasting the money on candy crush or something I guess, this game is of much better quality than your usual mobileshit game. I would just prefer you not give away your money this mindlessly, especially since modifying the save file to obtain the diamond drill is probably not so hard to do, if you really want that. With a few extra bucks you could've just bought a new mainline pokemon game instead, or any new game for your 3DS.

Sadly you can't. What will happen is that you'll lvl it up to max, you'll eventually lose and retire and you'll start again. Everytime your trainer ranks up, your magikarp will be able to grow even more.

The goal is to have a big healthy magikarp that can jump high (but not to high or it will get eaten)
