I'm really happy with how sceptile's been handled. Like, yeah, it's shilled a bit (most shorts portray it as the standard choice for gen III like zard in gen III, Ash and Sawyer, Pokken), but not obnoxiously so like lucario or charizard. It's a happy medium between obscurity and overexposure.

The fact is that all of the Gen III starter lines have gotten their fair share of the spotlight and each of them have about an equal size of fanbase as the rest. Swampert had the only meme out of all three with the Mudkipz, Blaziken is now considered the most powerful of the three, and Sceptile was Ash's main. This kind of balance has not been seen in any other generation besides, possibly, the 4th.

Absol was the shillmon of gen 3. It was everywhere, from the first Hoenn movie to the story mode of the first PMD to a scene of the anime opening that made it look way more important than it was. It gave the impression that it was a legendary at first. It wasn't nearly to the extent of Lucario but I bet Absol was a prototype to Lucario; with Absol they got confirmation that furry mysteryous misunderstood badass bros appeal to people, so they took it a step further the following gen.
