Why does Japan separate their pokemon centers and marts?

Socialism. Pokemon Centers in Japan are funded by the government, and moderated to keep them affordable to everyone.
Pokemon Centers in France partnered with the pokemoarts to give away supplies wholesale to people leaving the Pokemon Center to make sure they get home okay.
America lacks the separation or disturbing goodwill of France, and instead marts are rolled into centers which are all covered by your medical insurance. You just pay your premium when you pick up stuff at the mart and your insurance claim goes home to Mom.

Because GF thought keeping them separate was better in earlier gens. You know, like how the Inn and Item shop are separate in most RPGs. It makes towns appear larger than they actually are, since all of them will have the same two buildings to fill the space. Add in a Gym, and you're pretty done.

But as they started making the towns actually larger, with more buildings and larger space, finding both Mart and Pokemon Center became just a chore for some players, especially kids. Look at the last region with separate Centers and Marts. You can imagine a kid not remembering where the Mart is in Hearthome or Snowpoint, because the cities are fairly large. And unmemorable. So to solve the problem, instead of making colored roofs, they combined the both.

Fucking this. Remember the lump in your pants when an E4 member suddenly jumped 6-7 levels over the last guy? Now the e4 is like the span between Chuck and Pryce. All equally leveled so that the last one is a fucking joke by the time you grind to it.

To be fair, it is hard to find the mart in Snowpoint as it doesn't have paths/roads like the other cities. So it definitely feels like more open space
