Charizard can give you lots of different stuff though and if you're not abusing the shit out of the game you'll grind away for a long time. Not sure how many diamonds you can get for free but paired with a slowpoke you can get 2 items from charizard.

Anything that gives you coins seems good too I think, because upgrading starts to get very fucking expensive pretty fast, so probably Rowlet or maybe Poplio if treasure sunken treasure even gives you coins at all.

Just play it, there's not much you can do wrong desu. Just keep in mind that events can have negative outcomes where you lose your magikarp, so try to play it safe because every maxed fish nets you 10% motivation bonus.

For the people asking, I think it's best if you saved up your diamonds for charizard before anything else, will have biggest pay off in long run also you can't go wrong upgrading your lower tier berries. Hopefully people will start making guides n shit for best upgrade value etc but for now I wouldn't worry too much

there's a way to get around that if you fiddle with it more.

what i do is only change one hour at a time.
that's enough to get 2 trainings done.
once that's done, change to the next hour.
i noticed it's best not to enter a new day when changing the time or the game will sometime detect the tampering and go crazy.
if you need to fix it, just move to the end of the countdown when everything is alright again, and then move back to the present time, that will turn everything back to normal again.

i use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.singlebyte.timechanger&hl=en to get to time settings easier.
once trainings are done don't exit the game, just swipe down notifications, click the time changer thing on notification bar, push one hour forward, click the back button up top or your hardware back button to go back to the game and continue training.

Newer food = better food, that's all there really is to it. Of course you can focus on upgrading the newer stuff but keep in mind that it's more expensive than upgrading the lower food first which tends to spawn more often too. I never move forward more than a day and only move backwards when I have retired my magikarp. Letting the training fully charges to 3/3 and not clicking support pokemons all the time when you want to move backwards also help.
