I'm trying to remember the name of a Pokémon fangame, was hoping someone could help me out.

I don't think it was a romhack or made in Essentials, but it used GSC graphics for everything. You start out with an Eevee and use multiple Pokémon to battle at once (sort of like a Final Fantasy-type deal), and I believe the story was some meta plot about stopping MissingNo. from destroying the region.
>>

People are retarded with essentials, too. They fuck even the simplest things up (like adding a script, just check the script threads for examples.)
How many essentials games can you name? Probably as many in depth romhacks I could name. Being a fanboy for one side or the other in this argument is pants-on-head retarded.
Both ways have their merits and drawbacks.

>>32580345

>>
>>32579615
>How many essentials games can you name

More than any romhacks. And they'll be more varied in graphics and features than all the shitty gsc/frlg romhacks.
>>
>>32579615
There are competent people in both sides making great games, there is no reason to argue because both produce good shit so don't argue over nothing like a bunch of niggers
>>
>>32580345
Usually a group gets drawn together in the first place by something (in Sage's case, the vp makes a game threads) and if the group begins to put out a quality product, it'll entice other artists/programmers/etc to contribute

If anyone wants to start something to that effect then I'd be down to contribute, as 'superteams', despite their problems, tend to lead to better, more polished games.

Max, if you're reading this it might be a cool idea to have a 'Collaborations' channel in the discord which people can use to team up or offer their services for a fangame. Maybe it'd just devolve into 'plz sprite for me' but the discord is generally pretty tame chat-wise so I think it could be productive.
>>
>>32580555

No. Essentials is better because it has infinitely more freedom than romhacks do.
>>
>>32580887
A technology where a commonly sought after feature is a "no-lag script".
Yeah, when you get lag for adding events and map connections, that sure is reassuring the thought of freedom.
>>

What are some of your favorite Essentials games? I know there's Zeta/Omicron, Sage is in development, Uranium is overrated.
>>
>>32580912
You know what's an even more reassuring thought of freedom? Being able to do anything without requiring someone else to make tools for it.

>>32580913

I do. And the romfags who sperg out just because there's essentials content in the OP

>>32580915
There are far better games I'd want to play on my phone that shite 3rd gen romhacks.
>>
>>32580918
Ethereal Gates is pretty good even if it's a demo. Sage is looking pretty neat. There were a lot of great essentials games from back in the day as well but sadly they were never completed (shit like Acanthite, which I thought was so fucking cool as a 13/14 year old learning about Pokemon game development for the first time). I guess I'm a fan of essentials just because I like the potential for greater customization in terms of graphics, I'd say that ROM Hacking definitely has a better output at the moment in terms of the number of quality hacks vs. quality essentials games

Totally right. The pokered and pokecrystal disassemblies allow this sort of freedom for Gen 1 and 2, and pokeruby is making progress. Even Gen 3 has advanced in the past few years; people use the IDA Disassembler and write new features in assembly and C instead of being stuck with what the tools allow.

Yes, except Essentials allows me to expand on it however I wish. If I want to add some crazy new ability, I can do it. If I want to add 1500 pokemon, I can do it. If I want to make a gen 5 style game, I can do it. If I want touch screen or mouse functionality, I can do it. Even if Maruno or whoever the fuck is behind on adding new gen features they're easy to add yourself if you have even the slightest programming skill.

Meanwhile with romhacks

What exactly can't be done in Gen 3? And what's to stop people from eventually trying to disassemble Gen 4 (besides perhaps the disassemblers losing interest by that point due to its filesize)? It's not like Essentials can even do 3D without lagging like shit.

I'm making it so that TM balls are yellow like later generations, but the pokeball sprite looked gross with the yellow color palette. I made a custom sprite that flips the colors so that the tan is on top and it looks better, but I still think it looks a bit awkward. Thoughts?
>>
>>32583952
Perhaps maybe using green or blue would work? I'm not really sure of the limitations of gsc hacking since I'm an essentialsfag. If those look bad too then I'd just keep the default Poke Ball sprite since having a separate one for TMs isnt a huge deal
>>
>>32583952
That's pretty disgusting yeah. I remember a long long long time ago, Crystalfag posted a slightly custom ball sprite (with a button) that would at least help it have a more defined shape cause those two colors ure using dont blend

xDD uwu thyou Simba!

Doing minor balance changes, kind of a Drayano style thing. Firstly Im working on abilities, giving more flavour wherever possible (like Drapion getting Merciless over Sniper etc) and erasing the shit second ability in some Pokémon, for example Ledian goes from Swarm/EarlyBird/IronFist to IronFist/CompoundEyes), so you can't have Early Bird, but you've got Iron Fist guaranteed and an alternative HA if you want to take another approach in how to use the shitter. No type changes, maybe I'll do really tiny BST changes if my shitmons are still really shit despite better abilities.

It's nothing too overboard really, you're not going to be ultra-surprised or shaken up at the changes, but it'll be enough to bring my huge stack of shitmon selection to a playable status, hopefully.

Next is moves, then tutor/Egg moves, then wild held items Im tired of Pecha Berries.

Any ideas for obtaining Hidden Abilities? I was thinking Capsules, but that's boring

Hi! Does anyone know how to randomize a ORAS hack? I've been wanting to go back to Rising Ruby Sinking Sapphire with the Meme Sapphire version, but wanted to mess things up a little for myself and include all the balance changes in the modified games, if that makes sense to you.
If anyone knows where I can find a reliable source on that, it'd be great! Everything seems fairly outdated now that ARM9 + Luma is the way to go for hacking your 3ds.
Thanks in advance for the attention.
>>
>>32585812
No, but I think that's a planned feature in the future since Mateo and Rangi seem like friends and have already been making changes in their hacks to reference the other.
>>
>>32586015
Yeah, once both hacks have stable 3.0 releases, we'll probably look into making them trade-compatible. Red++ 3.0 is going to use the expand-dex hack to allow more than 255 Pokémon, and hopefully by the time it's out I'll have done something similar with Polished Crystal.
>>
>>32584232
For Hidden Abilities, how about a special kind of tall grass/water/cave floor?
>>
I know I am going to start a spat but: given the list of things I want to do with my game, is it better to go the romhack or essentials route?

1. New attacks that are copies of current ones, such as Return in different typings. NO new abilities.

2. Altering Pokemon's sprites, types, abilities, stats, and attack pools.

3. Making it so that happiness affects accuracy and critical hits or something similar.

4. New items that are copies of others, such as new eviolite for sp att. and att.

5. New map with a tileset I have made.

6: 16 gyms, with two of them being double battles.

There are 350 pokemon in the game.

I've dabbled in both, and would love the mobile capability of romhacking, but I don't want to get so invested in it before know if it's even feasible with what I want to do.
>>
>>32586130

Most of that can be done with ROM hacking tools to edit data tables and maps (AdvanceMap, PGE, G3T, etc). They're the sort of changes that even beginner ROM hackers can make. If you start with Emerald, DizzyEgg's scripts can expand the number of available Pokémon, moves, items, etc, and add a lot of newer features like the physical/special split and Fairy type if you want them.

The only part that would require asm/C programming is happiness affecting accuracy and critical hits. That would probably be easier to do in Essentials with Ruby scripting. On the other hand, your final game would only be playable on PC, instead of multi-platform emulators or flash carts. And if you ask for help with it, I doubt it would be a complicated routine to write once you're familiar with the programming language.

https://soundcloud.com/dimbus-maximus/aurugama-city-night

Here is the night theme for Argenchi's sister city, Aurugama.
Aurugama City is known for their streets of gold and festive Daylight Ceremonies.
It's also home of the Dragon/Fairy Gym, which is the last trial a trainer faces before they are approved to challenge the Pokémon League.

It is inspired by a Chinese settlement that fought wars with Johto in the olden days.

*After one particularly disastrous war, people of both regions fled for new land and colonized the four islands, each unaware of the other group's existence.
They continued the old regions' traditions of festival, making paper lanturns to appease the guardians of the Sun and Moon. Their lanturns would take to the sky every Saturday night, over the Sea and the Mountain ranges.
The both cities would stare at the night sky in awe of the others colony's lanturns, unaware that they were separated by an ocean.
When the finally set out to find the source of the lanturns, they came to find not the faces of an old enemy, but those of a new family, and they were at peace.*

We're using BYOND (http://www.byond.com/) to make our game, which is a dated (and quite terrible) engine for tile-based multiplayer games.

The human sprites we use right now are custom ones from older sources, they're exactly 32x32 which is why he looks off.

>>
>>32594310
The software just provides you with the tools to create your game, everything that's in the actual game is either OC (as in the code and map) or ripped from RSE/FRLG/PMD + fanmade sprites

If we used the original tile sizes from RSE instead of scaling from 16x16 to 32x32, the PMD sprites would be too big

Most cities/towns (red) and points of interest (blue) are not connected by routes. This is intended and I don't seek feedback in that in particular, more about the region's shape, colours, if it's geography makes sense, etc.

I recommend that the blue would be the towns and red would be cities. Areas of interest should be more distinct than just color. As far as geography it's not the good on the surface but it is an interesting idea and could go somewhere if polished. It's damn cool art style you came up with.
>>
>>32596432
It ain't my style but there's nothing wrong with it and honestly imagine that being in a Gen 4 game. Maybe fill in the left side full of trees cause that one house on the top left looks really lonely. Maybe like one or two more of the same style house.
>>
>>32596542
Thanks man. I originally had it filled in with trees. but I felt that it made the city look a bit bland and I felt that having the little inlet with the house in it kind of eased the transition from sea->grassland. There's another house of its kind on the beach. I think both of them are going to be points of interest (hence the signs), the one on the beach will probably be like that place in slateport, not sure about the one in the top left, maybe just the house of an important character.

Final(?) version of Route 3. I decided to make the exit of the cave into the next town on a different map so that I could reload the map and use a different tileset as I've almost used up all of the tiles in the current one.

the waterfall looks like it leads up to some cerulean cave like dungeon full of strong pokes and a legendary.

the idea of a town split down the middle of the river is great, leaves a lot of possibilities for hidden item spots and fishing.

there could even be a little sidequest to unlock entering the gym where you need to solve a feud between villagers on the left side of the river and the villagers on the right.

also the river flowing along the path of your journey is kino and genius level design.

You made this map with 1x1 tiles in mind and not 2x2. You'd either need a really complicated tileset where a lot of tiles are just other tiles with offsets, or you'd have to realign a lot of them.
Also there's only one tile layer in Gen 2, you can't have shit like the trees or house roofs poking up into the tile above them. You'd need to add extra tiles with the tops of those house/tree tiles on top of whatever other tile you have, and you'd have to change the palette to fit limitations, plus you'd either have to prevent the player from going to that tile or they'd appear above the tree/roof.

I see what you mean, but now that trainer on the bottom route is completely pointless and the decision to fight the Lass and grab the Pokeball or just ignore it is gone. I do like the berry tree in that spot, though.

Even without lore, we can use that information to flesh out areas. Is it near an ocean? Have someone who likes shells and beachcombing. Is it far away from the ocean? Have someone who wants to see it. Taking stuff like that into account can help flesh out the world.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of romhacks out there.

How can you make your romhack stand out? Noticeable? How do you make it popular?

What's the trick to be visible?
>>
>>32615040
Make a good game. There may be a lot of hacks but there's probably less than 10 of actual good quality.
>>
>>32615040
Finish it. Even if it's shit, a finished hack is always in demand.
>>
>>32615040

This is like writing a book so you can be a famous author. Don't. Start with an idea that you want to turn into a game, even if nobody enjoys playing it except yourself. Then put in the time and work to make that idea real, even the boring details. At that point you're already ahead of 99% of the half-assed unfinished hacks out there.

Then post it on different sites, engage with the community, take feedback and fix bugs and release updates. Screenshots or videos are more attractive than walls of text.

And of course, the most important thing is to have something playable, even just a beta. A thread full of shiny screenshots and no ROM isn't a hack, it's just graphic art.
>>
>>32615040
Just be good. 99% of ROMhacks are pure shit.
Being complete is also a plus, like 90% of ROMhacks are incomplete.
Also, you DON'T want to get too popular. If you get too popular Nintendo will notice, which is the worst thing that can happen and will probably lead to you getting a C&D like Prism and AM2R.

How is that a bad thing? That is LITERALLY the biggest marketing and publicity your romhack could have. It will put it on the public eye like nothing else. Furthermore, you, the person, the developer, will get momentary fame as well that you can use to kickstart something else later, maybe your own game and start up a Patreon or something too. And if you still want to complete the romhack later then just release an update anonymously and that's that.

Getting C&D is hitting the jackpot like nothing else.
>>
>>32615280
>And if you still want to complete the romhack later then just release an update anonymously and that's that.
Neither Prism nor AM2R have been able to do that, and KBM is never allowed to make another Pokémon ROMhack again.
Doesn't seem worth the publicity.
>>
>>32615297
>Doesn't seem worth the publicity.
Not if you don't know how to exploit it.

Can someone please talk about the difficulty of making a fan-made Pokémon game? What if I'm someone who programs in Python, JavaScript, C++, a bit of Swift, etc.? I want to know the difficulty/learning curve for something like this.
>>
>>32615358
If you want to apply programming skills, then use pokecrystal or Essentials. pokecrystal is written entirely in Z80 assembly language (although macros and Crystal's event scripting system make it easier to use). Essentials is built on RPG Maker XP and can be customized with Ruby scripts. Traditional ROM hacking for Gen 3 involves editing binary ROMs, so you end up using tools and hex-editing precise file offsets.
>>
This was page eight.
>>
>>32615539
>>32615358
Ruby and Red also have disassemblies, not just Crystal.
>>
>>32616842
True, but pokeruby is far from complete and there's little reason to use pokered instead of pokecrystal. (What does it have that pokecrystal lacks, Ghosts and the Safari Zone? And more glitches?)

Although you *could* help translate pokeruby from ARM assembly to C. They just added a guide: https://github.com/pret/pokeruby/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

Try Pokémon you might not think are viable. Some have had base stat and type changes, and can learn new moves. Even Unown could be a useful early-game mon.

Face looks a bit flat, as does the rock
Dream World art tends to be simplified heavily, it's a fine place to look for a pose but you should look at other gen 3-5 sprites to get a grasp on the sprite style.

Question: I want to play HGSS on an emulator, but I want to trade pokemon between the two.
How can I do so?
>>
>>32629940
I don't think there exist a DS emulator which supports local multiplayer, I heard there was a Wi-Fi one, but the WFC servers are down so whatever.
>>
>>32629940
Easiest way is to just use a save editor and copy the Pokemon from one save file to the other.
>>
>>32630913
That doesn't count as a trade for trade evo purposes, though.

Hey I have a dumb question, sorry if it's already been asked
