They seem to be now, early on not so much. Lt. Surge's Raichu used way more than four moves.

Find a better replacement for that shitmon on the left. The other three are passable and will make an interesting type core once you fully evolve them. They'll struggle with Rock types and Decidueye will have problems stopping Ground and Water that trouble the other two all by itself. You should at very least work towards getting a good Fighting type to alleviate the Rock problem, but not one that will also be weak to Ground or Water. Machamp, Conkeldurr and Mienshao are all cheap, strong and fit for the role. This is also why Rotom is the best possible glue for the rest of your team - strong vs Water types, immune to Ground and also beats most Flying types that would otherwise be a threat. Eelektross isn't as good as Rotom, but it's the second best thing and Rotom itself can be hard to get. Last slot could be whatever you want, but I'd go with any Steel type personally - you have nothing to stop Fairies otherwise.

Even the nips who created the anime decided that Primarina is obviously too girly for the main character.

Then why not giving him a Popplio that doesn't want to evolve? They did it so many times with his teams and a couple of his non-evolved pokémon were actually pretty strong to be in that form (Snivy for example that also was a female a very girly in the anime)

This is actually an interesting convo and this viewpoint is the one I agree with. All the jokes about Ash-Greninja jobbing doesn't really change it was heavily favored by GF and has an overall reputation as a cool mon.

I also think Ash's team even by ashime standards will be full of cool and/or badass mons, so I'm expecting a Kommo-O to be on his endgame team for this generation.

The fact ash ninja is considered an alolan pokemon and that ominous greninja zoom in during its last time on screen seems like a hint. Not to mention Zygarde is in SM unless it's retconned in the anime.
