If gyms return in a future game, do you think Z-Crystals will

wouldn't really make sense considering they're not region specific, and the badges are proof of beating the gyms of that region.
perhaps they could vary up the z-crystal design from game to game? or perhaps embellish the badges with them?

Oh, you beat the grass gym leader? Cool, take your badge and TM. Now, if you want another challenge, go check out this previously inaccessible area just outside of town. After a small puzzle of some kind fight the totem pokemon and get the Z-Crystal.

Trial Captains and even another region version of Kahunas could easily be implemented so there is a specialist for each type in future regions.

I cant think of any reason why both cant exist simultaneously.

Not that guy, but I liked trials more than gyms. Gyms are basically just buildings with a few trainers in them. There's nothing interesting about gyms, you fight trainers just like you would on a normal route between two towns. Not all trials were good, but at least they were something different. And even with trials instead of gyms, there are still "bosses" like the gym leaders, the Kahunas are pretty much the same thing.

In the future, they could just have a trial leading up to the gym battle. Kahunas were pretty much gym leaders in everything but title anyway. As for Z crystals or whatever similarly functioning mechanic replaces them— eh, I'm sure they'll think of something.
