I never really understood how the Elite Four worked. If one becomes champion and is defeated, why don't they just get demoted to a normal Elite Four member with the weakest member getting the shaft? Also, when one becomes champion, how do they promote themselves to champion like Lance did? To become champion you have to beat all of the members, which basically becomes impossible if you're one of them.

If Prosseor Oak was the champion prior but turned down the spot, they would still have a person in his place. We saw this in Gold and Silver, Lance became champion and there were still five people at the league. Unless if this was all a recent event where they didn't have ample time to find a new replacement, there was one champion that was never revealed to us, or the league is newly structured just like Sun and Moon.

Elite 4 members must have a monotype team, they're like elite gym leaders, maybe to be a e4 member you must first own a gym. Champions are trainers with free teams (may be monotype if the trainer wants) who beat the e4. In Lance's case he give up his spot, became a regular trainer, won against the e4, and became the champion. Most of the champions stays with the title and try to defend it against any challenger. Some of them have other goals and let the previous champ there as champion, but get registered as a champion himself.

I always thought the Elite Four were simply the strongest trainers of that region, and the only reason why we get monotype teams is to make it easier for the kids. I mean, we almost always get monotype gym leaders, but Blue is the exception with him having different types when you face him as the Virdian gym leader, so somewhere there could be an Elite Four member with an exception to the monotype rule as well.

Agatha's situation was weird. She was "advertised" as being a ghost member, what with the Lavender town music, and being close to death's door due to her old age, but she couldn't have Gengar's evolutionary line spammed in her team with it being the only ghost at the time. It would be a bit much when Lance already did that with Dragonite's evolutionary line.

I always liked to picture that the reason why the Elite Four members were elite was because they specialized not in only one, but two types. Lorelei was Water/Ice, Bruno was Rock/fighting, Agatha was Ghost/poison, and Lance was Dragon/flying (but moreso in his gen 2 appearance). Later gens just made this fall apart by going full on mono.

There were a lot of Champions before Blue, as shown in Origins, but at the time Blue challenged the League, there was no one in that position. Just like how Red had quit later on, the Champion before Blue probably had just quit and Blue came in to challenge the League before the E4 could fill that position.

But that's what made it all the more satisfying to beat the Elite Four as a kid. Lorelei was possibly the most challenging hurdle, her ice and water moves affected about half of my team. The only Pokemon I had that was super effective against her was a grass type, which didn't have very good defense against ice so I was pretty much screwed. Never really cared for any of the electric types at the time which made it all the more challenging, so after pushing myself through the rest of the Elite Four was a breeze in comparison.

It felt like they picked three random typings to make an E4 out of, and just so happened to pick some of the worst ones. There's only 2 ice types in Hoenn when you don't count Regice, there's only 3 ghosts, and the Champion uses Water just like the last gym did, at least in Emerald. Sidney at least has 5 different pokemon, even if one of them is Mightyena.

I don't even know what types you COULD replace the E4 with. Most things in RSE's dex weren't E4 material, after all. Maybe a Fighting one with Medicham/Machamp/Blaziken/Hariyama/Breloom, but that's basically every fighting type available. Still more than Ice had.

Speaking of that, I think it would be neat if they gave us a prequel game where you either play as Agatha or Samuel Oak. Everything you catch is compiled into a notebook, and on your journey you basically go through the precursor to the Pokemon league or something completely different. Instead of the more modern metallic badges, you would basically get merit badges that a typical boy scout would get.

I'm noticing that most gyms and e4 revolve around a "theme" more than an actual tyoe, for example ghost type, usually revolving around the theme of "spookiness" instead if having a full mono team

I kind of like Mono type teams. Honestly, ever since Gen V, there are enough mons to work with and be creative with so you won't have a team that gets fucked over by what ever weakness. Apart from Ice, Ice wil always be weak to everything
