Think about it, Whitney got into Pokemon because it was popular. Completley self absorbed and cared very little about them aside from their better stats and what it looks like.
Fastforward, she's become attatched to some of her Pokemon. And she sees now the people who were like her had changed also. But they changed in worse ways, neglecting them, beating them, ignoring them, etc.. That was when her transformation began, when she was found by Ghetsis, he knew how to manipulate her and then gave Whitney a new identity.
