The animation was generally garbage except for a few cherrypicked battles. SM is more consistently fluid. Storyline was a complete fucking mess and probably the worst next to Johto and Unova. Battle writing was terrible.

The anime pretty much just borrows character designs and does its own thing, it can't really have "filler" in the same sense that an anime adapted from a manga like Naruto/Bleach/One Piece can.

People think it just means when an overarching story fails to move forward.

Which is funny. There are cases, like Saint Saiya's Asgard arc, which are actually filler exclusive to the anime but have an overarching story regardless.

XY was great. I can recognize the flaws of Serena having no character or goal for a good chunk of the show and Ash's other pokemon eventually getting sidelined for Greninja but it was still hype and generally fun to watch. SM is just boring.
